Get Him to the Greek
This is a parody of the rock-n-roll rollercoaster. Born of a Forgetting Sarah Marshall character, Russell Brand plays a past-his-peak rock star coming to terms with a recent decline in record sales and relationships. Jonah Hill also reprises his role as a fan of the fading rock star in charge of getting him from London to a LA gig within 72 hrs. The film didn’t disappoint per se, but it also didn’t blow me away. Comedy is a fickle thing, and obviously each attempt will have varying effects on different people, with vey few attempts able to claim universality. Having said that, I love quirky off-the-wall humour; I can even get into some real base stuff, so long as it fits into an otherwise intelligent concept. The Greek falls somewhere in the ether for me. I have an appreciation for Russell Brand, and he certainly provided most of my laughs. I’m getting the feeling he is a bit of a comedy savant, in the ilk of a young Robin Williams; his brain moving faster than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest. The problem here is that he seemed somewhat constrained by the script. It is not a good sign when you have more fun watching him shoot off-the-cuff with Larry King than in a feature film. He did a fine job with what he was given, and better than anyone else I could think of for this role. I did, however, have issues with the acting of other cast members. Jonah Hill provided a paint by numbers performance that really only felt real when his character was under the influence; luckily this was a good part of the time. P. Diddy’s verbal inflections were like readings from a large font script hidden just off screen. In the grand scheme of things this is a light comedy that shouldn’t to be taken too seriously, so I guess these are minor points. The audio and video quality on this disc is fantastic, and I would place both at around 4.5/5. Particularly, I found the (parody) music production first rate. As a matter of comparison, I would place this one somewhere near Forgetting Sarah Marshall, slightly lower than Walk Hard, and well behind the Python films. Overall I came away from The Greek feeling somehow content but also ![]() If this movie were a food it would be… [Show spoiler]

![]() P. Diddy was rather stiff, but i thought he had some good lines. The "Jeffrey" scene was rather ridiculous. "I'm on the Jeffrey too!" Never seen any of Brand's other movies, but i thought he pretty much nailed this. He did the best he could. I saw he has 2 (lol) autobiography's called "Wooky Book" and, what else, "Wooky Book pt.2." I couldn't figure out if it was a mock up or if he actually is the person described in the books. He strikes me as very talented and i would like to read them someday. I thought the music video was hilarious. "I've actually been thinking about going to Africa sometime. I've seriously considered it." Why does the British accent make stuff like that so much funnier? I mean alot of Brand's lines would fall flat without his inflections. Last edited by Riff Magnum; 01-14-2011 at 03:18 PM. |

In Bruges
So after having 93 people recommend this to me over the last year, i finally saw it. I didn't want to because i try to avoid Colin Farrell and movies that claim to be "the best thing since Pulp Fiction" ![]() Wow!! Who knew, right? Well shot. Great dialogue. Great music. Kinda like "Fargo" meets........... ![]() I give the movie an A. I saw it on Blizray via Netflix. The PQ and AQ were blah, blah, blah.....we all got 92" screens and are living high on the hog. I get it already. The presentation was solid, but i'm tired of handing out 4/5 on everything that isn't either mind blowing or obviously sub par. It was solid. I give it a 4/5. ![]() |

Weird, it opened at a ton of local theaters around me too. Not that i had to drive very far to see it the other day, but it was only at a few places in the whole metroplex before today. ![]() Good for Aronofsky. Good for us. |

![]() Well, it's coming to the UK theaters on the 21st. I could see it soon. Even if I never get the chance to, I'll be willing to blind-buy it (I imagine it'll hit discs this summer). ![]() |

Yeah, i started appreciating him more once i saw "The New World" and i thought he was really good in "Crazy Heart." It's that damn "Alexander" movie that got him off to a bad start with me, but i'm beginning to see it was not his fault.

Surprisingly great film. Farrell, who won the Golden Globe, got robbed of an Oscar nom. Between this, Ondine, Triage, and most recently The Way Back, Farrell has come into his own and has become an excellent actor. |
