I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before...but I can't remember details.

Has anyone contacted Criterion about this?

28. Do Criterion Blu-ray discs cost more than DVDs?

Criterion’s Blu-ray editions will generally be priced to match our DVDs. It makes sense to us: High-definition mastering and restoration has been a part of our DVD production standard for years. And for our customers who might be on the fence about whether to buy DVD or Blu-ray, we thought the best thing we could do was take price out of the equation.

Seems like since late 2010 all the dvds are priced at 29.95 while the blu rays are 39.95.

Benjamin Button is cheap because basically it's just a Paramount release with Criterion branding. Paramount handles the production, distribution, etc.

Yes. They did price match their DVDs for a long time, meaning all of them were at 39.95. Several months ago, Criterion realized they could produce their DVDs for cheaper, so they dropped the cost of them rather than keeping the price match in effect and keeping the DVDs more expensive.

Speaking of DVD/Blu-ray. This now makes 28 consecutive spines on BD. I'm not saying we'll never get a DVD only title again, but it will probably be a very rare thing.

Dude, you killed the excitement over the April announcements. Of course they're priced more. Why would someone contact them about that?

There have been several titles which Criterion has released while other studios have concurrent releases. It depends on all sorts of issues with contracts. Usually when Criterion loses the rights to a film they list it as out of print on their website, even if some are still on store shelves.

They have rights for the DVD, yes. To release a BD version would require getting clearance and possibly a separate set of rights to do so. Major studios seem very happy to release BD versions on their own - Universal is actually releasing Fear and Loathing on BD in February 2010. There is no way they're going to let Criterion release a BD to compete with theirs.

No day ones jump out but Le Cercle Rouge and Blow Out will definitely come to mind during any sales and White Material has 'eh, what the hell' written all over it.

I know they made an announcement about this on their site last year to the effect that they were lowering the price of the DVD version when releasing both formats. I think it was around the time of the Night of the Hunter announcement because it required different price points, being a 2-DVD or 2-BD set.

That's because the DVD's got cheaper when before, they were priced the same as blu-rays. Good for people who still buy DVD's while still the same for people into blu-rays.

I hope that "Sweetie" on Blu-ray means Criterion is getting "The Piano" from Miramax.
