Remote trigger issues

Hey guys, I have a few questions regarding my attempts at getting my remote trigger to work between my XPA-3 amplifier and my Yamaha Rx-v663 receiver. So just to give a quick rundown, I have my RX-v663 setup with the pre-outs to the XPA-3. The XPA-3 is set to unbalanced for each channel. I have made an attempt at use a male-male 3.5mm jack between the 12V remote trigger out on the Rx-v663 to the 12V remote trigger in on the XPA-3, but with no success. When hooked up like this and after turning the Rx-v663 on, the XPA-3 just sits there with the orange LED indicator on rather than switching to blue, indicating it was powered on by the receiver.

Am I doing something wrong here? Is there some sort of setting on the Rx-v663 that I need to tell it I want the remote trigger to activate? It's not a huge deal at this point, just annoying that I have to manually turn the XPA-3 on each and every time I use the system. Any help is appreciated, and if you guys need more info for clarification just let me know. Thanks in advance!

Not sure on the Yammy but on my Pioneer I have to turn the trigger on in the menu on the receiver

In the menu of the Yamaha, where you setup the inputs for each source label, there should be a choice for 12v trigger. You need to turn that on for each input that you are using the amp for.

Well I searched through all the menu options and saw nothing about 12V trigger choice. Can you be more specific about which menu option exactly? I will keep searching in the meantime. Thanks for the help so far, though!

I believe it should be under setup in the menu. I think that is where mine is in the PIO.

Hmm... sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult, I swear But I did look in the manual setup section and I looked through each and every option, and I just couldn't find any choice for turning on Remote Trigger. Again i will keep searching, but so far I am just coming up with nothing.... so frustrating

After having gone through the manual online, I have to ask, do you have the trigger wire in the right socket on the receiver? There are 3 right beside each other the IR in and out, and the 12V out. It should be the one on the right, when looking at the back of the receiver. Other than that, you're right, there is no mention of turning on the trigger anywhere in the manual. I read through it, used the search function, and came up with nothing. As a matter of fact, the only mention of connecting an external amp deals with the pre-outs only. Very strange.

Yep, I have the jack in the socket on the far right when viewing from the back... it is the one labeled "Trigger Out" rather than "Remote Out". And youa re correct in that there is no mention in the manual. I have searched through ALL menu options and can't find anywhere that I can turn the remote trigger on within the setup menus... WTF?!?!

I'm wondering if the remote trigger is connected to the IR in/out ports beside it. I think I read on page 109(?) about turning on those connectors when in use with the scene settings, for controlling other devices. Maybe that has something to do with it. Try activating the IR ports for various scene options.

Could be the Yamaha doesn't put out a strong enough voltage for the Emotiva.

Makes sense, sort of... I read through the entire posting in the link you sent, but it still seems a bit hazy. Both the trigger out on the Yammy and the trigger in on the Emotiva are labeled 12V, 15mA, so I have NO idea why the Yammy wouldn't be powerful enough. I couldn't understand from the link what I might need to get, though... the Niles adapter mentioned is discontinued, so I'm not sure what to do.... so frustrating.

I didn't do anything on my Yamaha AVR but plug them in. I've heard that for some, a mono cable worked but not a stereo cable & vice versa. I would go on the Yamaha website and ask the question. I've always received an answer within a few days.

as cheap as these cables are buy both a stereo and a mono from radio shack and try that. the emo will trigger with voltage as low as 6 volts. if that's still not working the good thing about your receiver is that it has a couple of switched outlets on the back which means you can buy (also from radio shack) a 12v a/c plug in adapter power supply and cable and plug it into the back of the receiver (use a short 2 or 3' extension cord cause receivers get hot and it will damage the adapter) when you turn power on to the receiver, the outlets become energized and the power adapter will send 12v to the amp trigger and it will turn on. this works because that's what i had to do when i had an Onkyo 805 and needed to trigger my XPA-5. i've included a link and with this product you will also need a type F adapter which is what plugs into the end of the cable from the adapter and into the XPA-5 trigger. i still have my old one from when i had the 805, trust me this works. if you don't want to goof around, go to radio shack and pick up that power adapter and the tip adapter for less than $30 bucks for both, set the adapter for 12v (slide the switch over on the face of it, plug it into a short extension cord (2 prong type, get it from lowes or home depot, hell get it from the supermarket just get a cheap one, remember receiver's get hot so move the power adapter away from it, it's got a long low voltage cord on the end of it so your fine) then plug the extension cord into the receptacle on the back of the receiver (with the receiver turned off) then connect the adapter tip make sure it's facing "tip +" and then plug it into the trigger port on the XPA-5, turn on the receiver and your amp will turn on too.

I picked up a second XPA-5 about a month ago slightly used and got tired of having to turn them on an off (I admit I was being lazy). My Onkyo doesn't have an Outlet on the back (technical term) and the triggers aren't for zone one. I purchased two 12v 500ma power supplies and a green strip. I plugged the Onkyo into the master outlet and now when the unit powers on the strip powers the two 12v supplies and bingo, two live XPA-5. I think it was one of Solarrdadd's old posts that gave me the idea.
