Just to add too what I said, places like BB could have a free of charge FW update by Geek squad or something you no? & then teach the consumer about the need for FW updates. I dont think HDM will catch on 'mainstream' until there are HD & BD players right out of the box that play all the movies that are out & will be out PERIOD!

lol people are really just that lazy too, instead of updating something to get better use out of it they think it should all work with out it for 299$ they should have to do a little extra.

If nothing else, put some firmware updates on the movies themselves. I'm sure there's room for them.

At least people are buying them.

There still are a lot of "in the middle" in the middle people who would be prepared to work out and do the firmware update. I can think of my uncle, who is not exactly a tech enthusiast but I can see he would work it out if the problem arose.

And as sj001 said, this is a problem with both sides of HDM, not just blu, and it is a problem with early-in-the-game standalone players.

The Sony BDP-S300 has been out a few months already. Some of them have been sitting in warehouses during the whole time. There's no way of packaging new firmware discs in those older units. If I am right, my guess is that Sony is probably not even making them now that two other models are out.

My friend suggested to management that they shud give the buyers firmware updates on CDs when they buy the units but they said it's not their job to do that. he thot that would be more cost effective than having a bunch of players coming back. but.... what does he know?

I also agree. That was great getting an update with R&C before playing the game. Maybe each new release has the update. If you are already updated, then movie plays. Easy

IF you came to my store, and I was customer oriented, I would install the update for free, leaving enough time for you to look arround at all the new releases.... Cost of advertisiing to get a body into a store vs cost of 5 minute upgrade...hmmmmm let me think

Well as far as convenience goes in the box would be better (no chance of the 16 year old at BB forgetting to give the disc). Like others have said if you can put the disc in the box PUT IT IN THE PLAYERS. Great ideas in this thread.

I agree. That is why I went for the PS3, loads up right away! I could have gone with a stand alone for my second unit, but instead got another PS3 so I have two and don't regret it at all.

I do think that the average consumer though does think of the unit as a gaming unit and not a movie unit, even with the free movies. Kind of hard for some people to connect the dots.

The sooner the need for FW upgrades is over the better.

Only problem with this is all the systems have to be the same no differences in the player at all make it like HD DVD with only Toshiba making players. Some firmwares can be as large as 100 mb if theres 10-20 different players out that thats 1-2 gb worth of space plus what ever else is needed to run the update

I bought two of the Sony S300s for my brother and his son for Christmas. Both have been wanting one for a while and since I didn't know what else to get them, it seemed like a good idea. Was tempted to buy another one for me, but I like my Samsung too much to get rid of it.

I'm pretty sure I'll have to show both how to do the firmware updates, but after the first time, they should be able to do it themselves. If not, no big deal.

i own a PS3 as my bluray player, but just out of curiousity, how do people update firmware on standalone bluray players? it should just come on the movie discs that require them, not like they dont have enough space to hold it. (i read a post above, maybe not, ha)

DirectX is a single universal system. If you run windows, you can use that DX installation

There is simply no way to include all firmware updates on every title, at 50MB+ each especially when they are often not available until after the title has shipped

It will not work, it will never work.

Until you mentioned it, I use to think that my 40GB BD loaded right up. Of course it had to go through it's normal "boot up" or as I call it "get right" phase..... to me it's only a matter of seconds not minutes.

well then what do you think of the proposed, "Have a new firmware update disc that is given to the consumer at point of sale" tactic?

You download the firmware on the computer and then burn it on a blank CD.Then you stick the CD in the player.
