I watched The Lookout and The Expendables this weekend. Reviews coming tomorrow.
I had a $50 gift card for both Best Buy and Amazon. The Best Buy order came to $56 with free shipping ($15 each for Romeo, Patton, and Legends, and $10 for Traffic). The Amazon order came to $58 ($20 for Girl, $19 for Bridge, $5 for Bank Job, and $16 for Casablanca. All in all, it averages to about $15 a title, which isn't spectacular but is still pretty damn good, especially with two pre-orders and a digibook.

I must have glossed over the fact that
[Show spoiler]none of this film was shot on location, but rather on a UK set
. Luckily I discovered this fact after watching it, and I was truly in awe at the achievement this film represents (particularly considering its age). The colour palate, at times subdued, can sneak up on you and flood your retina with an orgasm of hues. The effects used are breathtaking, and although they can’t quite approach the realism of today’s best, they do contain a humanity that can’t be duplicated digitally.

The story is very well written. The struggle between a well intentioned (yet inadvertently arrogant) religious mission trying to force itself onto the permanence of the Himalayas and its people yields a satire that is dry and satisfying. This satire is mixed with a genuinely unique bouquet of genres that result in a highly entertaining experience. I should have anticipated the ending sooner than I did given the film's intended message, but I was too busy letting the story take me along for the ride.

I’ve already mentioned the standout elements, but the remainder of the technical aspects are also top notch. The acting, directing, and score are a pleasure to behold. I especially appreciated the fact that I hadn’t seen much of this cast before, and David Farrar was fantastic as a nonchalant antagonist in league with the very nature of northern India.

I am very happy to have it in my collection.

4.5/5

[Show spoiler]

A wonderful fusion of flavours and spices served with a side of warm, soft goodness...just watch out for that post curry kick.

I personally can't stand the film, but I enjoyed reading your review and I'm glad you liked it. Surfdude wrote a very good review of the film several months ago.

Grown Ups - I dont really care for any of the leads in this film but thought Kevin James was decent comedic actor. With that said I still thought the film would be funny as the trailor looked decent. Now the film wasnt great by any means but it was very amusing and it did have some laugh out loud moments. I am starting to like Adam Sandler more and more and may have prejudged him to soon. He was good in the film. Chris Rock looked out of place and I dont like David Spade at all.

This was one of the better comedies of this past year but that isnt saying much. I was letdown numerous times this past year with films like Cop Out, Hot Tub Time Machine etc...and this film was certainly better than those named. All in all not a bad comedy at all and I would give this film a slight recommendation as it is enjoyable and has some nice funny moments.

Film Rating - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

PQ - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

AQ - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

And Soon the Darkness (2010) - Never seen the original so I couldnt compare the two films. Man I cant believe how skinny Odette is. She looked hot in The Unborn although it was a bad film. In this film she was to damn skinny for me. Amber Heard however looked very nice although I have to say Odette has a cuter face. As for the film it had its moments but there were times when I wanted to slam my head into a wall with some of the actions of the lead actresses. I know in a lot of horror/thriller films the leads sometimes do dumb things but man I can never get over it.

As the film went on and it had some nice suspenseful and tension build up it got better and also the decisions got better as well. I liked the climax and thought it ended very well so overall I was satisfied.

Film Rating - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

PQ - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

AQ - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Devil - I already reviewed this film once and this was my 2nd viewing. I think I rated it 4 1/2 stars on my initial viewing. This time around I watched with a couple of distractions as I watched it at my cousins house. While I still enjoyed it its not the same with distractions as most of my fellow movie buffs here know. I was thinking of downgrading the film to just 4 stars but due to the environment of the 2nd viewing I will not change rating as it may have played a part in my experience.

Ticks - This is for u Nolfoc. Finally got around to watching my homie's favorite horror move Ticks aka Infested. Amy Dolenz was a cutiepie. This was a typical old achool b horror film involving insects/bugs etc....So if u are an old achool horro fan then Im sure u would like the film. I probably wouldve liked it more if I had seen it back when it came out. I still thought it was ok and the effects werent to bad also. It was cool seeing Alfonso Ribeiro playing someone outside of Carlton haha. All in all not bad but the fact that it was VHS quality downgraded my viewing experience. Again this is only recommended to real old school horror fans only.

Film Rating - 3 stars (out of 5)

Got Em!!

Still pretty darn fun after all these years. It’s quite a quirky little film with plentiful amounts of action, intriguing special effects, and zany comedy. There are plenty of sight gags, witty lines, and amusing moments to keep it fresh and funny in its own wild way. And centering around the lore of ufology, the movie takes full advantage of poking fun at nerdy alien culture and government conspiracies. A lot of it can be a dry deadpan sort of humor, but it works. And beneath it all is a bit of a dark and morbid undertone, almost like a Tim Burton film (this might actually be a good compliment to “Mars Attacks!”).

The story is pretty decent, with a clever (albeit very unbelievable) premise and with a cast of decent characters. The movie sets up an interesting world of its own, and it is pretty tightly constructed.

The film is well-filmed (maybe a little on the wacky side, but not too much). Acting is pretty good all around. Production value is pretty good, although some sets, props, and costumes may appear a bit fake or dated. Most of the special effects hold up, but not quite all. Music is okay.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Yes.

The Blu-Ray is out of this world. Well, the picture quality has a fair amount of noise with iffy detail and some weak color/contrast. But it does show adequate sharpness, especially with some of the SFX scenes. Sound quality is awesome.

PQ: 3.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

Men in Black II
[Show spoiler]
Continuing in the same vein of the first film, “MIB II” has butt-loads more crazy comedy, bigger special effects, a more ambitious story, more action!

But is that really better. Meh…the story is ridiculous. In itself it feels very shallow and contrived, and is ultimately very short. But what really bothers me is that it is filled with one too many unbelievable moments (like a giant worm skyrocketing out of a sewer…and nobody sees it…uh huh…). One too many twists and turns strains it even further. The only redeeming value is that characters are still adequate. On repeat viewings, I’ve found that the story’s weaknesses can be forgivable, as the comedy and action are still pretty strong, more or less.

The film is still well-made with quality photography, adequate acting, and a high production value. A lot of the SFX are pretty fake-looking, but a lot of them are pretty cool as well.

3/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 2.5/5, film: 3.5/5)

Recommendation: Liked the first film? Rent this, see what you think.

A Blu-Ray for this would be nice. But it looked surprisingly good upscaled.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
[Show spoiler]
What’s the best way to kick off a series of “X-Men” prequels? Start with the best, most badass character! Ah yeah…

“Wolverine” shows incredible promise, as it pits the title character against jeeps, helicopters, mutants, military firepower, and the works! There is definitely no shortage of frenetic action and special effects here!

As far as the story goes, I generally dig it. Berserker characters like Wolverine have always interested me (maybe I’m one myself!!). Like any other story with these kinds of characters, “Wolverine” goes on to show a bit of a heartfelt tale in which the main character tries to reconcile his wicked past, only to have it catch up to him. From then on, the revenge plot emerges. The plot twist toward the end kinda messes this up, but it still works in general. What really messes it up though is all the extra stuff heaped onto it: the useless subplot with Cyclops, for example, or the whole spiel with Gambit. They might be cool, but there’s just too much going on in this story, and it becomes very convoluted. If they trimmed it down and made it just Wolverine vs Victor Creed and Wolverine vs the military, it would probably be more solid.

The film is a bit of a mess too. Photography is generally good, although some action scenes are a bit jittery. Acting is great with a few exceptions. Editing is a mess in my opinion; I think I read that the studio imposed themselves on this film, and it kinda shows. There are just way too many scenes where characters appear out of nowhere (like Gambit suddenly jumping from a rooftop when he was previously knocked out, or Victor Creed suddenly showing up for the final fight), and some scenes really do look like they were spliced in (like the scene where Cyclops is captured in school). On the plus side, production value is generally high (despite a few fake-looking SFX) and music is pretty good.

3/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3/5, film: 2.5/5) Came pretty close to upping it to 3.5 though.

Recommendation: Rent it if interested.

The Blu-Ray is swell. Picture quality looks awesome sometimes, but other times it does look a bit soft and noisy. Noticed a few anomalies here and there, but it is otherwise pretty clean. Color and contrast are okay. Sound quality totally rocked.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 5/5

X-Men.”
[Show spoiler]
Here’s where the big modern superhero craze started (or did it start with “Blade?” I dunno). It’s certainly the first in a while. With the promise of bringing a legendary group of heroes to the big screen, “The X-Men” succeeds in presenting the X-Men universe with a fairly strong amount of action and special effects.

For the most part though, the story takes the center stage. It swiftly moves along, showcasing the premise and setting up each of the characters and plot elements with precision. By the end of the movie, you get to know all about the megalomaniac plot, the fairly-deep characters, and the conflict-ridden world they inhabit. It’s not bad for a superhero film.

The film has great photography. Editing is a little fast, but never erratic. Acting and writing is fine all around. Production value is decent. Music is okay.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Yes.

This Blu-Ray looks slick and sharp, and pretty clean. Some color/contrast can be a little weak, and there is some grain/noise. Sound quality is pretty good.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5

X2: X-Men United.”
[Show spoiler]
A quality sequel can potentially surpass its predecessor. They usually attempt this with overblown action, special effects, a more ambitious plot, etc. “X2” has all of these things, and they are incredibly entertaining. The entire last half-hour at Alkalai Lake is pretty darn incredible in itself, but the rest of the film is loaded with awesome action scenes.

And yet, the story is still quite strong. The characters are about as deep as they were in the first film. The story is a little broader and more in-depth, as it dives deeper into Wolverine’s back-story, the political backdrop of the X-Men world, and the themes of power and superpowers in general.

The film has excellent photography. Acting is still great. Production value is very good. Music is pretty darn good.

5/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

Recommendation: Yes.

This Blu-Ray has excellent picture quality. There might be a little bit of noise/grain, but it is definitely sharper, cleaner, and has better color/contrast than the first film. Sound quality is pretty good.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

X-Men: The Last Stand.”
[Show spoiler]
This third film can be a hit-or-a-miss with most folks. For me, it definitely has enough action to keep it a hit. It is one heck of a cool finale.

The story is perhaps a little hokey with the premise (a cure for mutation), but I felt it worked in general, especially in ramping up the heated issue of mutant civil rights to progress the overall story arc. Characters can be a hit-or-a-miss too, especially since some of them are killed off unnecessarily and some may receive iffy treatment. On the film’s own merits, I find it passable in general. Die-hard “X-Men” fans might be disappointed though.

The film has quality photography. Acting is not bad. Production value is high. Music is okay.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Fan of the first two films? Rent this, see what you think.

This Blu-Ray looks sharp and highly detailed, but with a pretty hefty amount of film grain and noise that can be distracting. Sound quality is great.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 5/5

Yea $15 a title isn't fantastic, but its really good...and even better since only $14 came out of your pocket

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

My selection wasnt as magical as I remembered it to be from decades ago. Oops.

I had a lot of fun watching it though. Mostly in a reminiscent fashion.

Redford and Newman definitely had some chemistry, and Ross fit right in as well.

The action was as fun as I remembered. The humor was still spot on too. Cinematography was special and some of the locales were mighty easy on the eyes. Directing and editing are good. Pacing is a bit of a "Stroll" though for an "action" Western.

I had to roll my eyes at the bicycle scene where Newman is showing off his stunt "skills" with Rainddrops playing in the background. Ah, the 60s and 70s were special times.

As Two40 mentioned, the ending is iconic and just cant be erased from ones memory.

Film 3/5 (I liked it / OK)

PQ on the BD was meh at best. Sad, considering some of the beautiful shots.
AQ was dodgy. Sounded like the whole thing was recorded in a sound booth. Very tight and contained. LFE was inappropriately bombastic (over the top rumbly) during music scenes and underwhelming during dynomite and guns.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Directed by George Roy Hill
Starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Katharine Ross
110 minutes

[Show spoiler]I don't like westerns, but this one isn't like a traditional western.

The film has a stylized look featuring photographs and a sepia tinge in many of the scenes to remind us that we are looking at an old story. I didn't care for it, but I understand why the choice was made.

I remember seeing the film in the early 70s on TV. Our newspaper's film critic had a ratings system consisting of excellent, very good, good, average and poor. He invented a new rating just for this movie: marvelous. I have no idea why I remember that.

The movie won four Oscars:

Cinematography - Conrad L. Hall (Cool Hand Luke, American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Marathon Man)
This was deserved. Some of the chase scenes were spectacular.

Original Song - Burt Bacharach/Hal David
Raindrops is certainly memorable, but I don't think it fit the feel of the movie and shouldn't have been included.

Score - Burt Bacharach
Good overall, but could have done without raindrops and some of the music used during the montage scenes.

Screenplay - William Goldman (Heat, Princess Bride, Marathon Man, Absolute Power, Misery)
Thoroughly deserved. The dialogue carried the movie and Goldman knew when to shut up.

I loved the movie as a child. I'm not quite sure why. I remember that my grandparents loved it too. Newman and Redford work well together and there's a lot of clever humor.

Watching it as an adult who has only started to analyze films in the past three years, I noticed a few more things:

It avoids most of the cliches that westerns rely on. For instance, Sundance was accused of cheating while playing cards. In every other western, there would have been a shootout with the accuser dying. In this, it's used as a plot point to show us how good Sundance is and there isn't a need for anyone to be shot.

The chase scene is my favorite part of the movie. In particular, I like how sparse the dialogue is during this extended sequence. We see everything unfold and hear the horses galloping, but dialogue is only present when it has to be. It reminds me of No Country For Old Men somewhat. The sounds are a part of the story and it works well. The cinematography during this sequence is exceptional.

It's surprising how little we see of the Hole in the Wall gang. We meet them and see two robberies, but that's all. It shows that Butch survived more on his wits than any ability to fight. When he's challenged, he cheats.

The scene with the dynamite leads to probably the funniest line in the film.

The story relies on the chemistry between Newman and Redford. We like them and root for them even though they are technically the villains. Redford in particular says a huge amount without actually opening his mouth. His expressions clearly convey what he's thinking. The friendship between the two is obvious in everything they do and say while facing their trackers. Katharine Ross also has an important role. When she's flirting with Butch, we learn more about the depth of his friendship with Sundance.

The whole tracking scene is a great idea with an collection of the best lawmen available at the time. They clearly demonstrate their expertise by killing members of the Hole in the Wall gang without missing their intended target. The movie then avoids the cliche of them later missing when facing Butch and Sundance. We don't see a shootout with our heroes winning. They are up against superior odds and are lucky to get away. That was a good choice.

The trip to Bolivia was quite well done too and their subsequent crime spree. I like the attention to detail. The language was a barrier and was dealt with properly. In the final scene, we are shown a real problem when Butch and Sundance run out of ammunition. Again they face overwhelming odds. On first viewing, I expected them to escape. But the choice to show what happens in the face of overwhelming odds was the correct one.

The final shot was a good way to end the story and makes me think of The 400 Blows as it ends with a still.

I still don't like westerns in general, but I have always liked this movie. It's carried by the charisma of two wonderful actors of the time and brings back a lot of good memories for me.

The Blu-ray presentation is weak. The sepia shots look terrible and it looks like a DVD for most of the 110 minutes. The main exception is the final scene which was shot in sunlight and has better detail. A film of this quality deserves better treatment.

Overall 4.5/5

Maybe "Marathon Man" should be more like it.

I wonder if a "Matrix" marathon will be in the foreseeable future...

Maybe "Marathon Man" should be more like it.

I wonder if a "Matrix" marathon will be in the foreseeable future...
Dodge this.
Finished Coraline earlier, watched Courage Under Fire(4/5), now watching Covenant(3/5) before I go get tested for diabetes. Will finish Crash, the best movie of 2005 and Cruel Intentions afterwards. Hoping I have enough time today before bed to watch TDK.

Thats a good review Steve.

Off topic, sorry. What has prompted you to be tested? Symptoms?
