Well run companies always are looking to future revenue, and as such spend on R&D. What will be in the pipeline is open for debate but to think nothing is being planned (or that no company has a vision of the future) is ill-informed.

Sorry guys Blu ray will not last because of me! Years ago when dvd came out I started slowly collecting them and around the year 2003 I figured that nothing would replace it or out do it for years to come then I started buying em left and right now I have over 3,500 dvds. I started collecting HD DVD's now it is obsolete now I am over 400 blu rays not sure how much longer it will last. I wait and wait for certain blu's to drop in price but they only drop as soon as I buy them. This has happend to me over and over in life sorry guys lol.

Probably about 400 of em and around 70 I watch over and over again. Like Dawn of the Dead the remake. For some reason everytime I put it on with a chick things go my way that night if you know what I mean, it has never failed me!!!

The World is ending in 2012 anyway. I doubt blu-ray will be over taken before then.

In the last few weeks my blu-ray collection has passed 400. I remember back in 2005 hearing about a new media format, and being an avid lover of movies knew my 1,000 DVDs would need to be upgraded. I personally don't care so much about the technology aspect, but now in the debate over if everything will become digital and with the decline of home media sales, I like having something tangible and am becoming worried for my collection. I remember back when iTunes came out and I would still go into stores such as Tower Records or Virgin Megastore purchasing CDs, believing that would last.

I think purchasing movies are different from music, although the argument can be made there's a major difference listening to music through your iPod headphones than in a room with 7.1 surround sound. Films like Avatar and The Dark Knight were not made to be viewed on a cellphone or an iPad, but consumers love being able to have such portability with their films.

So my question is, even though majority of the people on this site enjoy having a physic copy of the films we purchase, in years down the road will home media become as obsolete as CDs have become or will people still want to have a physic movie collection?
There is a thread about this already, but to answer your question before the mods merge this... Personally they can never take away a physical media, i think BD is the last format we will see.. it will be BD and Digital.. consumers will have a choice..

It will go the way of wax cylinders, reel to reel, 8-track, vinyl, cassette, VHS, lasar disc, just like DVD is doing right now... Eventually. Applying Murphy's Law, it won't last as long as DVD is lasting. Until then, enjoy.

I don't think so! It's enjoying an amazing resurgence!

Blu-Ray will most likely be the last physical format. It will still be around for years to come, but will be replaced by digital streaming media, which has been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years - both in quantity and quality.

I can now stream 1080p video on my projector and can project an image that rivals DVD. It's not much longer before it's even smoother and starts knocking on Blu-Ray's door.

Everyone's time in the sun comes to an end one day.

The demise of Blu-ray is inevitable, though the claims it will be the last physical format are exaggerated. Blu-ray will never reach the market heights that DVD achieved, due to a combination of factors. But it has already obtained for itself a steady and viable position for several more years at the very minimum.

Yep... And maybe blu ray will too. I still listen to some of my vinyl on my old licorice pizza player.

Maybe I'm old-timey, but I still prefer CDs to crappy MP3s, and I love having my physical blu-ray discs on hand that belong to me. I'm sure that streaming media will eventually match blu-ray's A/V quality, but for now, blu-ray is the best we've got. I think it is still on the rise. There are alot of people who still like to buy something that belongs to them.

Edit: Also, at my local B.B. store, they seem to have more blu-rays than DVDs.

I suppose eventually it will all die in favour of bits and bytes. Good thing that I have a huge vinyl library and I'm building a bit of Blu-ray one as well.

The demise of all formats is inevitable, so we agree there. I also agree blu-ray wont reach the market heights of DVD. But they will be a player in this new realm of multiple formats that new generations seem to accept. My parents? Nope not yet. One format for them is fine, DVD is sufficient for them.

The only thing that could replace vinyl in terms of sq for me would be blu-ray audio. Nice and lossless.

I would love to see some classic albums transfered to lossless 7.1 blu-ray audio. There were quite a few DVD-A discs of some great albums done rather well. I think that would be awesome!

Check out Morrissey's thread...he's been looking at getting some cans. I think you might be able to help him...I know as you helped me.
