Talking Superhero Drama Raven Coming to The CW

Well that sure is some outfit, not to far from some of the bikinis Nikita has sauntered around in this season. Could be a fun show if they cast the right piece of, err I mean talented young woman. So who is familiar with this property, would it make a good show?

Quote:
Oh how we love our live-action superhero incarnations…from the Marvel mania that has been dominating silver screens for the past decade to scaled down versions of superhero classics like Smallville. Well, speaking of the CW, Variety reports that another superhero(ine) is destined to grace the boob tube. The CW is planning on adapting Raven, which will be written and produced by Diego Gutierrez who is known for his work as co-executive VP on V. The CW is hoping this will appease audiences who have enjoyed Smallville, which is ending its series run after this season. If you are familiar with DC comic mythology or have seen the highly entertaining Teen Titans cartoon series that used to be on the CW every Saturday morning, you might know about Raven – the half-demon half-human girl with a temper that chants strange alien words to levitate objects around her. But that’s not all; she can teleport and enter the minds of others and must constantly manage her emotions. If they get out of control, she could become a full demon (doesn’t sound too far from reality, ey guys?)

The CW has attempted to adapt other DC comic characters in the past. In 2008, it took a stab at the potentially drama-filled universe of Robin (the boy wonder sidekick to Batman who has not seen a live-action translation since the poor excuse of a film that Batman and Robin was). The network was planning on developing a show centered on Dick “DJ” Grayson acrobatic family before he took on the role of Robin and kicked ass in Batman’s shadow. This was to be titled The Graysons, and supposedly did not move forward because Warner Bros. Pictures Group prexy Jeff Robinov didn’t want the series to be on the air around the same time as Nolan’s Batman. Fortunately for fans of Raven, there are no other similar comic universes to run at the same time, aside from Teen Titans repeats.

The WB also tried to make a Smallville out of “Batman” in the spinoff Birds of Prety in 2002, but it did not last. Another past development that just couldn’t hang on the CW network was also a DC title, called Global Frequency. However, Fox’s Human Target, which was derived from a DC title, still remains. I hope Raven does better than its predecessors because it has an intriguing universe that deserves to be explored.

Sounds like a cool show but I only know her from what little I saw of Teen Titans but she seems to make an interesting character if done right.

I would hope it is a darker side of the story and we're not going to have a demon who is afraid to kill because the moral code says no. Kind of like how Smallville is really a giant cuddly wuss, I'd prefer the next superhero or heroine to have some cajones and crush some frakking skulls.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping for. I'm hoping this show is like Birds of Prey with a kick ass heroine who isn't afraid of breaking rules.

The problem is that a character like this is only interesting when playing off other superheroes, like she did in the Teen Titans. But a CW show will have to scuttle that concept, basically isolating her to being a singular hero in the universe. That is why television adaptations of secondary comic book characters rarely work out. Birds of Prey had similar problems. Once you removed Batman, the other characters were just not that interesting to watch on a weekly basis. It will be the same here, as there is no chance CW gets the rights to Robin or any of the other familiar Titans for Raven's show. That being said, she does have a cool background and story.

It was about Batman's daughter fighting crime. Can't remember a whole lot as I young and it didn't last long but I remember it being good and she wasn't afraid to kick ass.

Looks like Raven or any other DC show has been passed on by the CW for this pilot season. I was looking forward to another superhero show and was really hoping that Green Arrow will get a spin off show and still hoping as it doesn't look like he will get an animated movie or live action movie anytime soon.

it's not CW passed on any superhero shows for this fall. They picked up 6 pilots which are.

Secret Circle joins the 5 pilots previously picked up by the CW: Danni Lowinski, Awakening, Hart of Dixie, Heavenly and Cooper and Stone. The network's choices include 2 genre shows, Secret Circle and zombie drama Awakening, one medical drama, Hart of Dixie, one cop show, Cooper and Stone, and one legal drama with supernatural elements, Heavenly.

Quite honestly after how Smallville has started to go downhill the last few years I'm really having a tough time seeing a good hero show coming from the CW (whose heart is set on soaps). The idea of a Green Arrow spin off sounds interesting but with every other show on this station being stuff like Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, and all this kind of stuff (to put it nicely) I'd be surprised to see something good come from this show (or more specifically this television station).

You should watch Supernatural. That show is a beacon of light for that network. nothing soapy about that show at all.

From the viewer point of view, Supernatural may be the beacon of light, but from the CW's point of view, they probably view it as the redheaded stepchild, especially since they probably wish Supernatural would stop with the classic rock and switch to current Top 40 pop artists so that the CW can pitch albums at the end of every episode.

Yeah CW loves Supernatural even if it's not one of there drama shows and still have complete faith in it and would love to see it continue. Not once have they acted like it doesn't belong or they are sick of it.

That show isn't my cup of tea but it is the exception to that channel. Every other show is some kind of teenage soap though unfortunately.
