i'm reallllllly loving the new artwork for Solaris. especially the colors
i enjoy the artwork for the DVD CC release (which is honestly part of what made me interested in seeing it when i saw it on amazon years ago), but i think i like the blu-ray edition more. can't wait to own it.

although... do i buy it day 1, or wait for the july CC B&N sale?!

I also like the artwork for Solaris. I've been holding off on the DVD for ages, and I'm kinda glad I did now.

I have to say though that The Great Dictator cover is the worst I've seem from Criterion in quite some time. It pains me to say it, as I have never felt comfortable with much of the criticism thrown at Criterion's cover designs in the last couple of years - I think they've generally done a fantastic job with their team of designers in giving the collection a fresher look, and the general quality of the cover designs is far better than it was 5 or more years ago. But I'm sorry - The Great Dictator cover is a shocker.

That is possibly my favorite Spielberg film and his most underrated. I'd love for Criterion to release it.

It's looking like Criterion's site is getting some UI overhaul... especially on the searching for film pages.

Your tone is sometimes hard to pick up but...

A) I didn't take that as slam.

B) My immediate reaction was 'the seventies album feel is a pretty good call although I don't think tacky is the right word'.

C) I still haven't come up with a better word than tacky.

That's why I said tacky too.

I love the 60's-70's (surprise), so right when I looked at the cover, I was thinking Journey mixed with disco letters. lol.

i never got the impression you were slamming it or anything, just that the comment was so perfect it made me lol quite loudly. lucky though, i was home so i didn't look like a weirdo just bursting out in laughter (like so often happens at work or some public area lol)

hmm... with all this talk of a lackluster / bad cover for Great Dictator, i wonder how the feelings were when Last Year at Marienbad was first released

now that seems like a cover that is boring, plain and generic, but maybe it's shiny or something. i'll know first hand when it arrives tomorrow, but i've never seen a cover that is all white and just has the name of the film written on it. that, to me, seems kind of "blah" but i wonder what impressions were / are, on it.

at least Great Dictator has a picture!

which leads me to a question: anyone have a favorite Criterion (blu-ray) cover art?

I don't care much either way about cover-art, etc.... but I seem to remember most people really liked the embossing etc. with Marienbad when it came out.

i kind of had the impression that the cover was / is embossed. don't know why.
i'm anxious to see for myself soon enough, and of course, also watch the film again

It "was" embossed with the digipack..... it's not with the plastic case..... so it depends on what one you're getting.

I like a lot of their covers (though no, The Great Dictator isn't going to be one of them).

Of the titles I own Repulsion, The Third Man and M are probably my favorites.

The Sweet Smell of Success will change that in a couple weeks though.

In fact, people make fun of all the packaging talk but the article about creating that cover that was posted a few weeks ago really amped up my enthusiasm for this release.

i was just about to look up if this was "re-issued" in plastic or if it ever was a digipack release, but that answers my question.
thanks in advance Beta Man

either way i'll be happy, but i'd be shocked if amazon still has any digipacks in stick. unless Criterion still readily sells both... which i don't think is the case.

i really like Revanche, The Thin Red Line and... crap. can't remember some of the others

i also really like The Double Life of Veronique

__________

i'm a big fan of blu-ray / CC packaging.

now, while i would never not purchase something because of 'different' packaging like i know a number of people on the site do (which boggles my mind in all honesty), i love seeing new artwork for catalog titles and not just rehashed dvd covers. - although some dvd / vhs covers are better than their blu counterparts.

i like when studios put effort into something and give it something a lil extra. i understand why they don't (they don't care, costs, customers will buy it if they like it - no matter if it has a big effin' picture with a thousand explosions on it or the title written in size 24 times new roman font) but when they do it is much appreciated by me.

i've seen the film before (one time and it was many months ago) but i don't recall the connection.

i do agree that selecting one image would be difficult for the type of film that Marienbad is, i think selecting one of the garden / porch views that are showed numerous times in the film would have been another choice. but at either rate, i'm not gonna squabble about a release that's been out for a long time now. just interesting that it's the only title without a pic.

one of the very few films (blu or dvd) that i've seen to do that.

So do I and it can be really little too. People slam The Maltese Falcon cover. I kind of liked it when it was announced but didn't really have strong feelings until I saw the way it was tied into the main BD menu. That completely won me over.

A tiny touch but I really liked it.

I think Blowout is my favorite Criterion Blu-ray cover so far. On the DVD side I always loved the cover to the Hidden Fortress.

Hopefully you keep the digi. The plastic replacement case sucks. The embossed digi is one of the best packages Criterion has done.
