Enter The Void

Wow, this movis pushes your boundaries and it's not one I'd recommend unless I know more about a person's taste, "tolerance" level, attention span and such.
I'm at the same time disgusted and thouroughly impressed, this is a well crafted artistic movie.

This isn't a full review and I don't know what to rate it yet, need to see it again.
This takes voyerism to a whole new level, or is it voyerism? I need to watch it with my cousin this time.

Squid what was it you read from a user review that put you off?

[Show spoiler]I read that there was a long, drawn out shot of a dead fetus and some other morbid stuff.

[Show spoiler]I suspected that, I can understand why you wouldn't want to see that. It shocked me as well but at the same time I could tell it was CGI, he used 16mm cameras I read, to kind of hide all the CGI with the "bad" PQ. It sounds like I'm trying to convince to see it anyways, but I'm not. We all have our limits.

[Show spoiler]I got the impression that it isnt really a part of a story (which I would be OK with) but it just contains some random "shock" imagry. True?

[Show spoiler]I think every shot in the movie is there for a reason, according to IMDb he did spent over 15 years planning it. The dead fetus is from an abortion and it is part of the story but a very small part and isn't "explored" more. There's lot's of sex and graphic imagery, but it's not porno though. The director is fond of exploring the line of pornography and art and this is no exception. You could argue that it is one long gratuitous movie, to me it depicts the dark bowels of humanity. I do believe it shows how wrong your life can go quite convincingly, through factors you can't control and the bad actions you take in life.

If you want to know a little more about what it is, I wrote more.
It is a beautiful and brutal story about siblings with eternal love for each other, there is some heart to it I appreciate. Two siblings who come from an idyllic life, they lose their parents as children and they vow to never leave each other. They are seperated and taken away to adoption shortly after and fast forward some 15 years, the brother (who experiments with drugs and begins to sell it as well) is in Tokyo asking his is sister to come so they can be together. Now there is some incestous love between them they never really go through with, I'm glad I don't have a sister as this would have put me off I can imagine. He then dies pretty early on and he's able to see the "aftermath" of his death with the people in his circle, just like The Tibetan Book of the Dead explains the journey you take in the afterlife. All through his viewpoint, in first person view. It's like watching a very private view of a character all the way through, you're inside his head and his soul kind of.

Just Go With It (theater)

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

Pretty funny movie, but lacking in any sort of depth. Gets the rating it did because I found it entertaining enough

____________________________________________

The Bank Job (blu)

PQ and AQ: 4 (out of 5)

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

I blind-bought this on Amazon for $5 because I enjoy heist movies and Jason Statham in the Transporter films. I found it to be an interesting film--much more complex than your typical heist film. The fact that it's based on a popular (but somewhat discredited) theory on a famous bank robbery makes it even more interesting. I can't rate it higher because nothing in the film really stood out (acting, directing, writing) and there wasn't a whole lot of depth to the characters.

I found it rather forgettable and dull.

...seems like I've been saying that for quite a few films these days...

Give it another go, I only marginally liked it when I saw it in theatres but then I got the blu-ray and now I like it more and more with each subsequent viewing. I really see it as the good version of that terrible Ladykillers remake with Tom Hanks.

Well it's based on true events but you get sucked into the story as it starts going and they plan the heist.
[Show spoiler]Then you realize the government are involved and so is some crook named Michael X and everything goes to pot once they get out of the bank. Best heist movie ever in my opinion, since Inception isn't a true heist movie.

Time to watch something totally not dull.

Dumb and Dumber.”

As the title suggests, this film offers a pair of ridiculously dumb and over-the-top characters performing some wild slapstick comedy, with lots of hilarious dialogue, silly antics, and some rather unruly gross-out moments. Yep, the film delivered.

The story’s brilliant in its own silly way. Certainly nothing sophisticated, but from the start it proves quite ironic as the dimwitted duo outsmart the villains by pure chance, and everybody assumes they’re pros. What follows is a classic road-trip comedy with lots of amusing side trips. Most road-trip films tend to be life-story allegories, and although I’m not sure if “Dumb and Dumber” really shoots for that kind of sophistication, I think it is inherently there. At the very least, it’s amusing seeing these two poor dumb schmoes moving from the bottom of the social ladder, to an even lower rung, before moving to the very top. But for the most part, it’s not a high-class film at all.

As such, the photography is pretty good, acting is incredibly over-the-top (and thus quite awesome), production value is adequate (some fake-looking stuff, but lots of clever detail as well), and music is semi-arbitrary.

The Blu-Ray version includes the Unrated cut, which features a few extra minutes. It kinds adds some padding to certain jokes; I used to think that the added homoerotic jokes were painful, but this time around they didn’t really bother me. But they definitely alter the context of other jokes in the movie, making them semi-creepy. Otherwise, I didn’t have much of a problem with the added scenes.

4/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

The Blu-Ray is not known for its quality. It is indeed on the soft side. It doesn’t appear DNRed; there is some grain intact and the “waxy” effect does not exist. But for whatever reason, sharpness and detail are a bit lacking. Fortunately, it is still a grade sharper than the DVD, and some scenes do look okay. Colors and contrast are not the best; fleshtones can be a bit pale in some scenes, and they looked a little oversaturated or dark in other scenes (I suspect due to lighting issues on the set). Sound quality has a few bright spots, but is otherwise average.

PQ: 3/5, AQ: 3/5

"I got worms!"

"My parakeet Petey...he's dead. His head fell off! Yeah, it was getting old..."

"I've had it with this dump! We got no food, we got no jobs...our pets' heads are falling off!!!"

"According to the map we've only gone 4 inches."

"Hey...you wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world...?"

Peter Travers' review, he rated it 3 out of 4 stars
[Show spoiler]Dull title for a juicy, fact-based caper movie that's full of surprises I have no intention of spoiling. I'll say this. In 1971, a robbery took place at Floyds Bank in London that involved a royal sex scandal. The thieves, played here by Brit athlete and model turned credible actor Jason Statham, seductive Saffron Burrows and the cream of Brit character actors, are hustled into robbing the place by higher-ups who are using them just to get their hands on incriminating photos in a deposit box. Director Roger Donaldson keeps the suspense crackling. By the end, you'll want to know more about a heist that literally did shake the empire.

just had to point out that i laughed harder and harder as each spoiler tag was followed by a response totally written in a spoiler tag

very interesting review Q?, and i'm eager to watch it. the previews i've seen don't make it seem at all hard to watch or whatnot so i have no idea what the F the film is about but i may just get restless enough to buy it at $23 instead of waiting for it to drop

Dumb and Dumber.”

[Show spoiler]As the title suggests, this film offers a pair of ridiculously dumb and over-the-top characters performing some wild slapstick comedy, with lots of hilarious dialogue, silly antics, and some rather unruly gross-out moments.

"Hey...you wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world...?"

one of the best comedies ever
