Oh yeah definitely, we always have a good discussion, never anything personal. For me, Brasco is as good as it is because of three things: 1) it's a true story (although reality does differ a good amount from the film), and a fascinating one at that, 2) the writing is very good and mature for a gangster-type film, and 3) the performances are wonderful. I rank it as Pacino's second best performance behind Dog Day. Depp and Madsen was also excellent.

Ten years ago, I beheld and bathed myself in the cheesy glory that was the “Charlie’s Angels” movie. Now, another film has come along that can easily stand abreast to this monumental epic…

“The A-Team.”

I pity the fool that don’t like these movies!

From the start, I could tell that the “A-Team” would be about as much silly and dumb action-packed entertainment as “Charlie’s Angels.” Both movies are based on old 70s shows, but are cram-packed with massive explosions, relentless fights chases and shootouts, tongue-in-cheek humor, and self-aware homage. As fast, big, and loud as both films are, there’s hardly a dull moment.

The story for the “A-Team” started off pretty well, but became rather thin and irrelevant as it went on. I’ve never seen the show, so I don’t know how it compares (obviously I know Mr T’s in it driving some truck; both elements are appropriately represented in the film). It’s mostly a fine excuse to create some impressive, unrealistic, over-the-top sequences. And in between there’s a bit of occasional character-driven humor and/or drama, but for the most part the characters are one-dimensional. The story is ultimately predictable, unbelievable, and absurd…it’s better just to sit back and watch the pretty ‘splosions.

The film shows fine photography with some cool stylish parts. Acting is okay all around: I think Liam Neeson nailed Hannibal, Quinton “Rampage” Johnson is a badass as Baracus without being cheesy or over-the-top, and everybody else was okay. Production value is high and the music is not bad.

4/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 3.5/5)

Recommendation: Action movie fans can rent it.

The Blu-Ray looks darn near perfect. Sound quality is impressive, but I felt some of the dialogue was a little hard to hear due to obstructive noise or something.

PQ: 5/5, AQ: 4/5

Synopsis:

This masterpiece by Jean-Pierre Melville about the French Resistance went unreleased in the United States for thirty-seven years, until its triumphant theatrical debut in 2006. Atmospheric and gripping, Army of Shadows is Melville’s most personal film, featuring Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Jean-Pierre Cassel, and the incomparable Simone Signoret as intrepid underground fighters who must grapple with their conception of honor in their battle against Hitler’s regime.

Review:

Immediately places itself among my top 50 favorite films of all-time. I've never seen a film be so gripping and put you on the edge of your seat by saying so little and relying solely on mood and the potential of what's to come. There are at least 2-3 scenes in the film where you feel downright uncomfortable because of how tense it is, but I mean that in a completely positive way. What makes the film so great is its direction though. Sparse and relying on mood and atmosphere, Melville's direction is superb. It's hard to believe that a film about a secret band of resistance fighters could be so good despite NOT showing any actual resistance, but that's a testament to the writing, acting, and directing of this extraordinary film.
Very tense and compelling movie. I liked the chilling atmosphere and direction too. It's hard to believe how relatively unknown it was. Did you buy it? I can't wait for the next Criterion sale to get this and Amarcord on blu.

Megamind - 4.5/5
Awesome movie, I'd say almost as good as HttYD and definitely better than Toy Story 3.
1. How to Train Your Dragon
1. Tangled
3. MegaMind
4. Despicable Me
5. Toy Story 3
2011 definitely has a lot to live up to if it wants to match 2010 in animated movie quality. I think the PQ issues were overblown for this release also but maybe my TV just sucks, who knows?

I bought it for $14 at Barnes and Noble about a month ago. They had it for $24 and I bought one of those Groupon 20 for 10 gift cards, so after that and my membership it was $4 (add the 10, and that's $14 total).

I absolutely love it. I really like seeing old scenes set in Paris, as Godard frequently does, on a side note. It's cool to see the Champ Elysees and Arc de Triomphe and all those things I saw in Paris, and how they looked 40 years ago.

As for Amarcord, how is it? I love 8 1/2 but have never seen Amarcord.

For the next B and N sale, as it stands right now, these will be the ones I pick up:

The Double Life of Veronique (must own)
Au Revoir Les Enfantes (I rank it as one of the top 3-4 films of the 80s)
Kes
Still Walking
Yi Yi
Solaris
Le Cercle Rouge
Blow Out
Diabolique

I liked him better in Brasco. He was very good in Blow, no doubt, but the subtlety of his performance in Brasco I thought was excellent.

Brilliant stuff.
Exactly. It's really hard to explain it to someone who hasn't seen it. Kind of like explaining the claustrophobia of Alien to someone who hasn't seen that. The mood and atmosphere ooze off the screen.

Army of Shadows is BRILLIANT!!! My favorite Melville film, which is saying a lot.

We Are What We Are 8.5-9/10

I'd have to watch it again, but I really liked. Very original and compelling story about a family of cannibals who has lost their Father and now have to fend for themselves. It's not a gory movie at all (except a couple parts) which i like. It's very fast paced running at a quick 85 min. It's a Spanish film by the way and is on IFC Midnight, but not in HD On Demand.

Black Death 8/10

Put a hint of Wicker Man and dash of Valhalla Rising and you have Black Death. I never was a fan of Wicker Man (original), but loved Valhalla Rising. Black Death was an extremely solid and somewhat chilling film regarding Christian warriors trying to hunt a clan of believers of Black Magic. It's from the director of Triangle (which I thought was bad). I thought this was much better.

LOL!! I usually post on IGN Boards. I'll have to start doing some copying and pasting to put some reviews here.

I still don't like Triangle. I just hate bad acting in a movie. It kills a movie.

strange question: where are you putting Au Revoir Les Enfants? in the A's or in the G's (where it would go if going by the English translation)? i'm thinking i'm gonna put it in the A's since the title hasn't been changed to English transition and it would be weird and irritate me to see a film that starts with an A (although, not in English) in the G's

“I Spit On Your Grave” 1978.

Old review still applies. For the US Blu-Ray, however, I believe the film is longer by over two minutes, and the rape scenes are indeed a little more pungent (and less choppy). The picture quality looks plenty sharper, cleaner, and more vibrant than the UK disc, but sound quality is nothing to scream about (PQ: 3.5/5, AQ: 2.5/5)

There’s perhaps nothing more depressing and bleak than seeing a human being receive the full blunt of another person’s violent malice. Whether looking at the playful mental tormenting in “Funny Games,” the brutal punishment of the Bride in “Kill Bill,” the relentless suffering in “The Passion,” the tense conflicts of “Deliverance,” the unavoidable humiliation of “The Human Centipede,” or the willful defiling and violation of dozens of nameless innocents in the unassuming villa of “Salo,” the portrayal of human indignation and suffering is always a hard-hitting (if not wholly provocative) element. And there’s perhaps nothing more invigorating and inspiring than to see characters overcome their adversities and claim justice.

“I Spit On Your Grave” beckoned with seemingly similar content to something like the original “Last House on the Left,” with the promise of controversial violence and heartbreaking humiliation. And the film delivered! Nearly an hour is spent on the main character’s plight, before spending the rest of the film depicting her vengeance. For both halves, the film is highly effective; the initial brutality is hard-hitting (even if the actors are a little over-zealous; I think Camille Keaton’s earnest performance balances it out), and by the second half you’re rooting for the main character.

This is a very simple story; you probably already get the gist of it from what I’ve revealed. But it is well-executed with an adequate group of characters. A few small parts hint at some moral complexity (a bad guy with a family, for example), but at its core the film is as straightforward as it can be.

Similarly, this is also a simple film. Photography is fairly plain, with some stand-out scenes, but most of it maintains a certain objective distance. Production value is very limited. Acting is swell though; some of the actors seem a little extreme with their roles, but I think Camille Keaton did a smashing job. She expresses great suffering in the film’s first half that’s really heartbreaking to watch, and she shows an incredibly cool and cold-hearted resolve in the second half matched only by the actresses in “Death Proof.”

In the end, the film is a bit of a rollercoaster ride, dipping into the extreme lows of human suffering, before rising into triumph. I think it’s cool, and would rank it well above the average fare of trashy exploitation films.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5, emotional impact: 3/5, controversy: 4/5)

Recommendation: Only for those who can handle violent, disturbing, brutal films. The rape scenes in this film might be a massive deal-breaker for most civilized folks.

This British Blu-Ray looks really nice in its pretty slipcover and with its glossy essay booklet. The PQ seemed a little underwhelming though; it is certainly sharper than a DVD, but it seems a little soft as well. On very close inspection I thought it looked pixilated, making me wonder if this is a 1080i presentation or something. From a distance though, it looks adequately detailed. Color and contrast are good most of the time, with maybe just a few scenes where they could have been better. The image is largely clean, save for some film scratches, some slight flickering in one scene, and a couple of other anomalies. Sound quality is lossy; it is clear some of the time, but some dialogue was low and noisy and hard to make out.

PQ: 3/5, AQ: 2/5

This movie is Region-B locked.

Next greatest blind-buy: “I Spit On Your Grave” 2010.

Same story, new film. I was expecting total garbage here, and I’m sure many other viewers out there will call this garbage.

I was rather surprised though: I feel that the remake is worthy. The first half of this newer film has a decent amount of tension and suspense. The actual rape scenes are nowhere near as long or provocative, but a lot of the violence and harassment leading up to it are meaner and more defined. It creates enough of a tense and brutal situation to warrant the revenge scenes that follow…and boy are they wicked! The last half of the film takes a page from the book of “Saw,” and the results are downright gnarly!

As for the story, even though it is the same as the original, it has received a decent overhaul. The bad guys are better defined (and yes, there are five of them now, just as was originally advertised). I didn’t think I cared for the main heroine at first, but in the second half I liked the rage she showed. Overall, the story is a little better-built, with more consideration put into the specific details, building up a climax, building tension, and putting more thought into the characters. I also gotta admire the attempt to twist up the story’s morality; it’s not so much black-and-white when one of the bad guys has a family…or is it?

The remake does feature quality photography; a little plain at times perhaps, but there are some good-looking shots in there as well. Acting is okay: all of the bad guys seemed decent in their respective parts, and the main character is okay, even if she is unlikable half of the time. Production value is appropriate for this picture.

My biggest gripe about this movie would be a certain lack of impact. The original packs a huge punch with the extended rape scene. But even without it, the main character had a certain coolness to her that the new reimagined character lacks. They replaced her stoic demeanor with a confrontational one, and although it has merits of its own (it’s good that she tried to fight back), it just doesn’t leave the same impact.

In the end though, the original film was a rarity at its time, and generated its own notoriety. I think this remake is easily overshadowed by the myriad of common torture-porn flicks that have come before it. I doubt people will remember it as readily as “Saw.”

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 3.5/5) Same rating as the original.

Recommendation: Horror/slasher/torture porn fans can rent it, see what you think. The original is better for the most part though.

The Blu-Ray looks great. It is very sharp and clean. Colors are quite dull, possibly as an artistic effect, but contrast seemed okay. Sound quality seemed okay.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5
