8.4 million year to date or 8.4 million in 1 week? I doubt seriously that PS3 sold that many in 1 week.

Do we have the figures here for North America?

Default 619,388 sold for the week ending 12/22

PS3 has outsold xbox 360 for the past few weeks and the gap seems to widening. The PS3 software sales passed xBox 360 also.

A 70:30 ratio will be enough for retailers to pull the plug on HD DVD. The presence of HD DVD software will begin to diminish in the first quarter as retailers make room for more Blu-ray titles.

I think you mean narrowing, i.e. decreasing the lead the X360 has over the PS3.

yeah, that could be argued either way.

Though realistically, unless the PS3 just blows up in 2008, it's going to be a coupole years before Sony completely makes up all that lost ground. I think they will...perhaps not in North America, but on a worldwide basis, since PS3 is handily outselling the 360 in Europe now, and the 360 might as well not exist in Japan.

And just think, the PS3 had to compete with 2 next-gen consoles, and cost $500 and $600 up until Q3 '07, whereas the 360 launched alone and was priced at $300 and $400.

That's the funniest thing about these "next gen" systems that people don't take into account. The Xbox360 was released at a selling price of $400-ish but was actually worth about $250 (especially considering that they KNEW IT WAS FLAWED AND DIDN'T FIX THE DESIGN for 2 years). So, Microsoft was basically looking to rape consumers wallets. The PS3 on the other hand, when released at a sell price of $599, was worth about $750-ish. Sony wasn't looking to take advantage of their customers. They did it to make sure that a quality piece of equipment was going to be recognized for what it really is! If they were all about money they would have just shipped it out with a $900 price tag on it. Granted, it's worth the $900 you'd have to spend, but.... well, I think you get my point by now.

I think this chart of overlapped sales since launch shows an interesting perspective.

Clearly the Wii has sold the best, but it shows the PS/3 has managed to sell about the same number of units at the same point after launch. Arguably, that is disappointing to Sony, but I think considering the cost and lack of distinguishing game titles, it's about all that can be expected.

2M PS3s sold in the last 4 weeks... now THAT is what I am talking about.

I predicted sales of between 2 to 3M for Nov-Dec and so far, we are at ~ 3M with one week to go. Good to be wrong.

It shouldn't be a problem at all because of the simple fact that the Xbox360 was selling primarily to a gaming based demographic the whole time that it has been available. The PS3 sells to that demographic AND the home theatre enthusiast as well. Trust me when I say that there are a huge number of gamers out there that have not purchased one yet on the sheer basis that it only has about 10 exceptionally good games. Over the next two years, when these gamers start to see the quality of their precious Xbox360 games stay the same and the quality of the PS3 content pull away with no distinction between the two, the numbers will SOAR!

Here are some fun calculations made with the VGchartz numbers:

November 2007
1st Week 222 455
2nd Week 242 097
3rd Week 356 894
4th Week 381 207
Total Worlwide = 1 202 653

NPD reports USA hardware sales for the PS3 in November 2007 as 466 000 which means 39% of Worldwide sales came from the U.S.

December 2007
Total Worlwide (3 weeks) = 1 583 699
1st Week 439 404
2nd Week 524 907
3rd Week 619 388
4th Week ??? ???
Total (3 weeks) = 1 583 699
Extrapolation for 4th week = 500 000
Projected 4 week total = 2 083 699
Assuming the same 39% Worldwide share for the U.S. and you get 812 642 U.S. PS3 purchases for December 2007

We'll see how the math holds up then NPD releases "official" December numbers sometime in mid-January. One thing is for sure --> HD DUD is in BIG trouble Would'nt have it any other way

well hardware numbers are all well and good. but the thing that could possibly hurting sony is people not using the ps3 for games. so software sales need to be equally as good

Not necessarily! Because of the PS3 I'm sure that they have sold A LOT of other high-end equipment. I know a few people that bought a PS3 and said "whatever" to the graphics abilities. So, I invited them over to my place for an afternoon of entertainment on my 52" Sony Bravia. After going back to their SD TVs for a week they just couldn't take it anymore knowing what the full potential was. Besides, I'm sure that Sony (although not the sole proprietor) is making a good turn on all of the royalty fees being collected for BD production!

Every time an xbox sell it doesn't mean a thing to the format war. Everytime a PS3 sell on the other hand it adds another weapon to the BDA.. I understand not every PS3 owner uses it as a blu-ray player but even if 1/3 does those are amazing numbers that ensure a Blu-Victory.
