Since you announced The Last Guardian at E3 last year you have been fairly quiet. What have you been up to?

We’ve been working on the final concept for the game over the past year, and I’m pleased to say that we have now locked that down and we’ve moved into full production. We learned from our experiences on ICO and Shadow of the Colossus that doing Research & Development at the same time as making the game slows down the process, so we decided to spend more time on R&D up front, testing out technologies and mechanics, before moving into full production. I’m glad to say that, right now, we’re in crunch mode.

I wonder what are the chances that they truly met their deadline if they just finished now their R&D...

Second-hand notes, translated from French so take with a grain of salt:

Quote:
The latest issue of PSM3 is carrying an extensive feature on Team ICO’s upcoming game, The Last Guardian. One of Gamersmint’s readers has an issue with him, and we’ve collected all the juicy details for you below.

For the first time ever, we get to know a lot of details regarding the game and it appears that the game is poised to be a masterclass. Fumito Ueda spilt the beans to PSM3 regarding his upcoming project.

The magazine got some hands-on time with the game and they got to experience the first level of the game which showed the very first “emotional interactions” between the boy and Torico. The game looks stunning according to the magazine and the world is filled with vibrant colours.

We’ve rounded up all the important details which the magazine carried about the game below:
  • The Last Guardian will be similar to ICO.
  • The game’s original music is not what's presented in the trailer. It’s just a test track being used.
  • Ueda stated that he’s able to achieve things with the PS3 which he couldn’t fulfil with the tech on offer with PS2.
  • Torico’s feathers, butterflies, dust, particles etc are managed in real time, many great animations were all made by hand.
  • The game will not be as confined as ICO.
  • Torico can apparently eliminate the guards, the child however can’t do that (so he will be playing undercover when he is alone).
  • Ueda didn’t reveal who the Last Guardian is, Torico or the boy. He said we’ll have to find out.
  • Team ICO has sought technical advice from all in-house Sony Studios wherever possible.
  • Torico's AI will have moods and react to the environment. The game will focus on cooperation to solve puzzles and explore the fortress.
  • Guards in armor are actually shadow enemies, when their armor glows they can vanish.
  • Ueda does not consider his work as art. It could be much closer to the concept art but that would make it difficult for some to enjoy and damage the commercial viability of titles. He must find the right balance.
  • Ueda would love the game to release on time, however he won’t rush things.
  • Ueda is wary not to make the game’s puzzles too difficult, however, he wants to maintain a good amount of challenge and hence they’re constantly beta-testing to measure the difficulty of puzzles and find the right balance.
  • There will be less fighting sequences in TLG than ICO.
  • Ueda has assured that the game will be released by the end of this year, at least in Japan.
It's not clear if the music in the LATEST trailer is being commented on. Hope so as it didn't really fit.
I think the bit about 'feathers, butterflies, dust, particles' is differentiating physics simulation from the hand animation. Some things obviously mix the two.
I think it should say Torico can KILL guards directly but the boy can only knock them out (see the barrel throw in an earlier trailer) it may be possible to knock them down to a permanent death in certain situations too.

Famitsu has a four page feature on The Last Guardian. It apparently includes a demo play session along with an interview of Fumito Ueda.

Here's some of the info that has leaked out of the feature:
  • You initially can't communicate with Torico, so he'll quickly fall asleep.
  • Torico can't eat everything. If he eats something he doesn't like, he'll spit it out.
  • The game uses a collision system with similar capabilities to that of Shadow of the Colossus.
  • Even if you're caught by the guards that fill the dungeons, the game doesn't immediately end.
  • Torico may have a life gauge.
  • They're currently looking into the possibility of showing gauges to support the player -- this is one area that Ueda is worrying over.
  • In its impressions of the game, Famitsu commented that it exceeded expectations -- it's real that exceeds real.
  • Torico actions are very detailed -- down to the level of his reacting differently depending on the sound in the area.
  • The game uses a fake language
  • Famitsu commented that the boy main character's movements are also incredible. Ueda responded that when the boy approaches a wall, he will naturally extend his arms out, and as he approaches Torico, he will touch the creature. To show the feeling of existence for the characters, you need to show such actions that make it look like the character himself knows that there's a wall there.
  • Ueda also talked quite a bit about the game's expressive and physical computation power.
Regarding Team Ico's PS3 remakes, Ueda said that Shadow of the Colossus is amazing when you see it in 3D. For ICO, he said that they're remaking the opening scene.

I love the fact that there is a game developer out there who is taking such care and putting so much thought into his games. I cannot wait for this as it will surely be one helluva good title.

Here we goooo! (the screenshots here aren't new and don't necessarily link with what was shown, they just help to illustrate)

Famitsu got a big scoop on The Last Guardian in this week's issue, with a world's first play sampling and a developer interview. I won't have access to the magazine this week, so here's a second hand report based off our usual source for super detailed Famitsu summaries.

DEMO PLAY

The magazine was able to get an early glimpse at the game in action. The demo the magazine saw was made specifically for demo play and offered situations different from the main game. Director and game designer Fumito Ueda walked the magazine through the demo.

When you first start off the demo, Trico will quickly fall asleep because of the inability to communicate with the boy main character. You can place something Trico likes in front of him, and his nose will move as he sniffs it. One example of a thing Trico like is barrels. You'll be able to use these as a means of starting communication with the creature.

This has been said in the past, but Trico moves of his own free will. He'll approach things that interest him -- things like barrels, small animals, grass and so-forth.

To advance in the demo, you'll need to make use of Trico. You can toss jars that release smoke. This will interest Trico, and he'll approach. If you get Trico in the correct position, you can climb on his back in order to get to the second floor of the demo area. This type of climbing mechanic makes use of the colossus collision detection schemes from Shadow of the Colossus.

Once you're up to the second floor, you'll find those armored guards that have appeared in past trailers. You'll need to move while taking care to avoid being seen. As the boy can't fight, this means hiding as you advance. You can also move to higher ground, as the guards can't follow because their armor is too heavy. The boy is also faster, so he can outrun the guards. While you can't use weapons against them, you can run into them to make them lose their balance, then flee during that instant.

The game doesn't immediately end if you're captured by the guards. They'll carry you off, but even in this state you'll be able to escape. However, if you're carried off to a certain spot, the game will end.

The guards will in general try to capture the boy. However, if Trico is in the way, they'll also attack him. They won't actually attack the boy, however -- they'll just attempt to capture him.

Trico does appear to have a life meter of some form. It's not something that you can see, but it may be internal. It looks like Ueda did not say what happens if Trico incurs too much damage from the guards and that "life meter" runs out.

Back on the demo's second floor, you'll find a switch which you can press. After doing this, you return to the area where Trico has been waiting. You'll need to make use of Trico to open a door and advance further. This is apparently where the demo came to an end.

Famitsu seemed to be impressed by the demo session, describing it as "exceeding expectations," and "reality that exceeds real."

The timing of this demo reveal article would suggest that the rest of the gaming press will get a look at the Game Developers Conference this week, so it's possible that we'll get some first hand English impressions and maybe even gameplay videos shortly.

COMMENTARY FROM UEDA

Ueda told the magazine that the thing he wants people to note from the demo are Trico's detailed actions. He has a number of reactions even when he's sleeping. Even the motions of his ears will change depending on the surrounding sounds.

As with past interviews, Ueda spoke quite a bit about the game's physics engine. As an example of the engine's robustness, he mentioned the movement of Trico's ears when they collide with a wall. The movement is not based off an animator's work, but off physical collision detection. Animators do have control over muscle movements, though, so they can make it so that Trico's ears will stand or fall.

Ueda also highlighted some of the boy's actions. When you approach a wall, the boy will put his hands against it. Similarly, the boy will touch Trico when you approach it. The reason for these details is to give the game world a feeling of existence by having the character itself identify and touch objects naturally.

Other points mentioned by Ueda:
  • The game uses a fake language for narration.
  • They're looking into the possibility of showing support info. This is an area that Ueda is worrying about.
  • Trico won't eat just anything. If he eats something he doesn't like, he'll spit it back out.
  • One of the concepts of the game is "height." There'll be situations where we'll see Trico jump.
  • As you repeatedly communicate with Trico, it will become easier to advance in the game.
SCREENSHOTS

Joining the interview text, Famitsu delivered a bunch of new screens. It's hard enough to describe screenshots textually, and even harder to summarize a Japanese description of those screenshots, but here goes:
  • A shot of the boy main character walking through a ruins area. This is apparently an area that Trico cannot enter.
  • A shot of the boy slowly approaching a sleeping Trico.
  • A shot of the boy climbing up chains. You'll be able to perform a variety of actions, including calling out to Trico, petting Trico, grabbing things, climbing and so forth.
  • A few screens showing off the effect of light falling in on dark areas -- for example, light falling in from above into a dark, enclosed area where you see chains, a stone floor, and dirt.

It's like ICO, but this time it's YOU getting carried off.

I think one of the trailers might have shown the boy wriggling out of the arms of the guards.

  • If you hit Torico's nose with something (and why would you do that, you jerk?), he will sneeze (awww).
  • It's currently a secret if there are are other creatures of the same race as Torico. Similarly, it's a secret if there are massive Torico-sized enemies.

Quote:
Guards
It was previously revealed that the guards who patrol the stages can capture the boy you control, and if they carry him to a certain area, the game will end. However, even if captured by the guards, its possible for the boy to escape. There's a risk in doing this, said Ueda, although he wouldn't share details. Because of this, the basic play style involves trying to avoid being spotted.

Character Growth
It looks like the boy will grow through the course of the game. I'm not sure if Ueda is speaking about getting stronger in a gameplay sense, or if he means the boy will mature as part of the story. Regardless, the character will not grow in such a way that he'll be able to defeat the guards.

Torico's Interests
The press demo showed Torico appearing to be more interested in things like barrels and jars rather than the boy. Torico will move to the things that interest him most. He won't just interact with the boy because he's there. However, if you improve your communication with Torico, his interest in the boy will grow, and he may end up placing greater focus on the boy.

One example of the growing relationship can be seen when Torico is asleep. If the boy attempts to awaken Torico by by pulling on his ears, Torico won't rise. This is because he's uninterested in the boy. However, if their relationship grows, you'll be able to use this technique to wake Torico up.

Details
As Ueda has indicated in other interviews, they're putting a lot of effort into the various motions of Torico. You'll see different reactions from Torico depending on which ear you touch. You can make Torico sneeze by touching his nose. And so forth.

Riding Torico
Torico has the ability to run. He'll run, of his own accord, if he's in a wide and safe space.

I believe this was in response to a question about being able to ride Torico. Ueda didn't really say if you can ride him or not -- just that Torico can run.

Torico's Enemies
Torico considers the guards that patrol the stages to be his enemies. He'll strike them even if you don't give him any orders.

Actually, you won't really be able to order Torico at all at first. Even if you guide him to open a door by flipping a switch, you won't actually be ordering him to flip the switch, but getting him to play around with the switch. However, as your relationship deepens, you will be able to direct him, to a certain extent.

Stages
The stage that was demoed for the press showed the basic progression system for the game. You'll find yourself in an enclosed area, and to advance, you'll need to break through -- for example, opening a door that blocks your path.

What's beyond the doors? Ueda wouldn't get into specifics, but did say that you may find the outside world expanding out before you. These areas could see form changes as a result of Torico moving through them.

Although we've only seen a small number of areas, Ueda assured that the final version of the game will have great variety of stages. There are narrower stages that the the one shown in the demo, and wider stages too. While the demo stage focused on puzzles, you'll also find more action-oriented stages.

Those more expansive stages may have giant enemies. Ueda wouldn't say for sure.

If you happen to find yourself in a stage with a massive drop, watch out! If the boy falls from a great height, he'll die. You can fall to a certain extent, but not from super high up.

The game won't have a portal-like location which you set out from then return to. You may actually not be able to return to some locations because of stage form changes due to Torico.

Amazon.com lists the release date for The Last Guardian to be Dec. 31st 2011 which is a placement holder for games which they do not know the release date of. Well while browsing the Canadian Amazon.ca site, they list the release date as Oct. 30th 2011

Another Canadian retailer, EBGames, is listing the release date for the ICO/Shadow Of The Colossus collection for Sept. 1st 2011

These dates seem reasonable to me. The collection coming out two months before the 3rd instalment makes sense.

What say you?

The Last Guardian, Team ICO Collection Delayed

Quote:
SCEA tonight confirmed it has delayed the release of The Last Guardian and Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection for PlayStation 3. Both titles were originally scheduled for release this year -- Spring 2011 for the Collection and Holiday 2011 for The Last Guardian.

New release dates have not been announced; though it seems unlikely both titles will hit this year. Game designer Fumito Ueda issued this statement on the PlayStation Blog:

"I announced at last year's Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011.

However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio's obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.

All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.

I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for "The Last Guardian" for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time."
