Penton, what do you think of the RED EPIC 3D cameras? How does the footage look from them?

Also, how is Marc Webb doing with the action scenes?

Penton - Did you get that big screen 3D TV yet? What 3D TV are you using?

Penton, I have a question regarding sporting events shot in 3D. Most of these events are shot from a distance, and then the cameras zoom in to cover a smaller area, if that is needed. Now, since zooming in lessens the field of depth, wouldn't that also be the same for 3D? Would that lead to a flatter 3D image? I haven't seen any of these events in 3D, I might add, so I don't know if this is even an issue, but I was just curious about it.

Penton just saw the annoucementment about the 4K screenings of Taxi Driver at AMC theaters.

Big thumbs up to the everyone at Sony for this one.

Now it's time for a happy dance.

Shark, guess I'll be seeing you either the 19th or 20th.

The footage is fabulous and I’ve heard no complaints about them. Rather, on the contrary, nothing but exuberant praise in regards to their size and compactness as a pair mounted on 3D 3ality TS-5 rigs.

Jim has done himself and his company quite proud with the Epic and more refined Red workflow, since the days of the Red One and if I ever become hair-challenged, I think it would be a real hoot to make a GQ list…..described among other things as “just plain bad-ass looking bald men in the USA” ….http://www.gq.com/entertainment/cele...d-100#slide=38

P.S.
b.t.w., an aside to the Blu-ray noted above (Get Low), which you may find curiously interesting (given your proximity) is that Robert Duvall attended Severn in Severna Park just off Benfield Rd. (unless they moved the school or the road since last I was in that neck of the woods on the my over to Annapolis).

You mean the really large flat panel that we were musing about awhile back? Nope, that’s on my *to do* list for our San Diego place after we get the tigerwood flooring installed and a few other home improvements accomplished which in the process will produce a lot of dust and dirt by the contractor due to the prerequisite demo(lition).

I am 3D equipped for our main abode (and our place in Big Bear) and as to which brands of monitor/projector be there….don’t bother asking, my secret. Despite what some may think, I am not like these guys http://www.brandchannel.com/home/pos...nt-Awards.aspx

Attention BobbyH, the Glock ^ took the Lifetime Achievement Award. I guess no respect for the Sig . On an interesting note to us moto freaks like SquidPuppet, an Aprilia-ized Ducati took the best Stunt Double award.

Yes but, due to the nature of the game, in contradistinction to motion pictures, their use can be difficult to avoid.

It’s an issue (or at least was prior to any expensive motorized rig or software solution) in the sense that different zoom lenses can’t really match perfectly, meaning they don’t track perfectly down the center and the zoom points will be slightly different.

An example...for last year’s FIFA World Cup, a total of 54 individual zoom lenses were tested and out of that, only 18 were considered good enough to work together in tandem during a zoom trial.

Nice BIG SCREEN opportunity for folks living close by the respective theater locations….and those avid cinephiles willing to do a ‘road trip’ for the event....no matter where they live. Eh?

lol, I scanned some of the comments following the nice piece posted in our News section of the forum. Those respondents whom are 3D challenged or of paranoid nature (given other recent Blu-ray news ), not to worry, Taxi Driver aint coming out on 3D. Aint gonna happen.

Glad to hear that the footage looks cool. How are the colors? Usually, 3D makes colors much darker than they are meant to be. Also, cool fact about Duvall.

But I've never seen Marc direct action before. The closest I've seen is the music video "Ghost Of You" he directed ( I watched it when he was announced as director to get a feel for his style). It'll be interesting to see what he does.

Penton, thanks for the answers . But wouldn't that make capturing sporting events (or any live events, for that matter) more or less useless, if they need so much work to make it work, and then only have a marginal effect? I mean, I have no hatred against it, but it seems unnecessary. Your thoughts?

Yes, it would be totally unlike you to include a product's brand name in your username.

Hey Penton,

I have a question in regard to the look of feature films today. I watched the Blu-ray of The Tourist last night and was more than impressed with the fine object detail and breathtaking Venice backdrop but started getting more than a little annoyed at the obvious Teal and Orange cast to the image. At times it was so over the top I thought I was watching Transformers!!

This is obviously a trend in Hollywood that has been getting more and more common with EVERYTHING lately. What are your thoughts? Have you heard any thoughts on moving away from this from some of the lensers out there?? It is starting to wear on me that everything that should be white on the screen is now teal, and who would have thought that so many consumer items scattered around the sets could be teal as well, there must be a Teal store somewhere in Hollywood that is doing gangbusters!!!

No, just because they’re ‘zoom’ lenses doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily that *telephoto-ish*. For example, the footage captured with the Canon lenses mounted on the Sony cameras during the FIFA World Cup on the 3D rigs had a focal length range of 7.5mm to about 165 mm.

The AVATAR production included a Fujinon zoom lens (6.3-101mm) on the Sony cameras. Most consider AVATAR to be the ‘gold standard’ for 3D imagery, no? Just stay out of the high numbers for extended periods of time if you desire more depth of focus for more of a captured 3D effect. In essence, the zooms allow more flexibility than with Ultra Primes or Primes.
