why don't the insiders just confirm it. i mean maxpower had the perfect time to confirm that this guy knew what he was talking about. but instead discredited about 50% of his story and was very, "well, you kind of have it right" about the other 50%. at best al0127's (kind of funny that he has a 0 in the middle of his name, kinda like SA0CD) friend is half an insider.

The only reason I might stop posting on this site is because we have bunch pansies. You win 51 weeks in a row and yet the sky is falling. I must say I admire HD DVD followers a lot more. They never win a week but yet they're optimistic about the future (they're insane) but yet optomistic

The point is, at this point in time, if any major HD-DVD supporting studio moves to Blu-ray, either exclusively or by going neutral, it's game up for HD-DVD.

Universal and Paramount are the two studios losing out big time, not only in the US, but the increasingly important European and Asian markets, yet we are supposed to worry about Disney supporting HD-DVD, but God forbid anyone suggesting Universal or Paramount will support Blu-ray, despite these moves being the most logical.

Since the Paramount pay-off, all logic has gone out of the window.

So far HD-DVD's two ground shaking moves have been paying off Paramount for $150m and selling A2's below cost for $99.

Neither move suggests the format can stand on it's own two feet without $ passing under the table to massage the market and push it away from consumers wishes.

al0137,

You should have your friend verify his/her own status and let that person post the information. Otherwise, I deem it to be posing as second-hand FUD.

And I am so tired of FUD especially when Blu has done nothing but trounce and clean the floor with HD RIP all year.

I think it has to do with Paramount. If anything, it taught us that ANYTHING can, and will, happen.

I cannot remember if it was this thread or not, but someone posted that if the BDA lets M$ go buy WB, then the BDA just doesn't want to win. I 100% agree with that statement. If WB is bought by HD DVD, I'm most likely done with HDM. I sure as hell ain't buying the inferior HD DVD, and letting M$ walk away with WB would be seen as a vote of 'no confidence' in their own format by the BDA. If they're not in it to win it, then why should I be in it either?

All of this being said, I still say in 1Q or 2Q, WB goes BD, which is going to "force" Universal to have BDs on the shelves as well come 4Q2008. At that time, CES09 rolls around, and if HD DVD is still "alive" Paramount will be nearing the end of their $150MM contract and will be suspiciously quiet at CES09. Once Feb/Mar of 09 hits (and 18 months has passed), Paramount comes out of its shell and announces that in light of market developments they will resume releases on BD again. Universal and Paramount will produce HD DVDs into 2009 at which point Toshiba pulls the plug...

Assuming WB goes Blu soon...the next thing to look out for in the first half of 2008 is either Graffeo and/or Kornblau at Universal "moving on"...shortly therafter we'll be rejoicing.

I have a very strong suspicion, that WB insider is a phantom, an imaginary red friend, so to speak.

There is Zero chance of Disney, Fox or Sony producing HD-DVD.

You have to remember that their film libraries are their crown jewels, the products of a life's work and have to be honoured, protected and exploited at all costs. Studio's don't give a rats arse about TL-51, nobody does (according to P-Man) and why should they when there is an existing format that can be played on 7Million customers hardware. And in a protected, region encoded format that has the bandwidth benefit to support multiple HD language tracks.

Blu-ray make better business sense for the studio's and CE manufacturers. Disney plans their DVD releases a decade ahead, there is NO WAY they are going to start to deliver on HD-DVD to sell 50K HD-DVD of their asset titles which will be ripped off in a week. The HD-DVD (and the entire HDM market, to be honest) market is tiny.
Disney are not going to go HD-DVD for PEANUTS and throw away their entire business to support a losing, insecure, poor quality format that will result in the long term failure of the replacement of DVD.

No ***ing way.

i couldnt agree more. seems like alot of people here have never had to deal with adversity throughout life. its almost embarrassing to be associated with people that show such weakness.

I just posted this at AVS as well.

Actually if you look at the archive you will see that this week we will get the numbers that were published last week.
Next week we will get the numbers for this guess.
Then the week after that we will get the numbers for the last week of the year.
The week they skip is the first week of the year or that is what they did with DVD last year.

Last year this is how the numbers were listed
WE 12/31 numbers for WE 12/17
WE 01/07 numbers for WE 12/24
WE 01/14 numbers for WE 12/31
WE 01/21 numbers for WE 01/14

So the missing we is WE 01/07 and until that point all the numbers were just pushed a week.

I wish I had access to smokes of that quality. I didn't get a chance to enjoy any over the holidays yet as I have been around family that tends to not enjoy that type of thing.

Hope to change that New Years eve though!

I suspect not, they are merely a different interpretation of MaxPowers viewpoint. However, his personal opinions are just that and demonstrate the problem with 2nd hand information. The fact is WB will do what they want when they want to do it and will use their own benchmarks to guide them.

They own patents on Blu-ray and HD-DVD. The significance of this on the format war is far more important than you may think. Look at this

http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#6.1

DVD player royalties are about $14 per player. That means if you are a manufacturer of one of the 130million DVD players sold last year, your $80 product made $14 for the patent holders and maybe $6 for you...

Think how the CE manufacturers will look at HD-DVD and Blu-ray market from that perspective.

I won't post a long message 'cos I'm feeling a bit under the weather (some evil virus or other). However for those concerned about sad & pathetic last ditch efforts by the red ant brigade to salvage an ounce of credibility from the Q4 sales, here are some numbers to consider.

Just my estimates of what Nielsen report but it put's the HD DVD challenge into perspective. Take 'em or leave 'em.

When Blu-ray thrashed the red ants 61:39 on what should have been a good week for them, the Blu-ray volume exceeded 240,000 units.
In the Simpsons week (last full week before Christmas) we will see Blu-ray volume exceed 350,000 units and a crushing 70%+ for Blu-ray.

And, in the final week of the year, Blu-ray should comfortably sell over 220,000 units. Remember that's just estimated actual Nielsen reporting BTW. Studio estimates will put these Blu-ray volumes up to 50% higher.

Now, selling a few thousand copies on Amazon - hell, even a few tens of thousands gets our red ant friends doing their victory dances (and who would begrudge these pathetic creatures a little festive happiness) but ANYONE who thinks HD DVD are going to match the hundreds of thousands of units Blu-ray will sell this week has not been paying attention to any sales figures this year. Look for a market share comfortably over 60% on week 52.

Dance, little red ants, dance! Enjoy sitting atop the mighty Amazon chart ( ) for a little while. But, Nielsen will soon confirm that, like every week you allow yourselves hope, it is nothing more than a delusion.
