Default PS3 Backwards Compatibility

Hi guys,

I know the 40gb PS3 is unable to play PS2 games at the moment, but do you think a firmware update in the future will change this?

thanks in advance

I am not a techno geek but I been told the PS3 40g lacks something in it's hard drive that makes it impossible

From my readings around the net, I have heard this is a possibility down the road. It would be a software emulation, but of course this is not written in stone at the moment, so don't hold your breath.

i think the only way this happens is if it gets hacked and somebody creates an emulator

If they can emulate the graphics core entirely, sure. It's possible, but to be honest, I wouldn't expect that sort of change until the product refreshes [ie, the ps3 slim/whatever].

Software emulation down the line is possible but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. Sony wants people to start buying PS3 games instead of replaying their old PS2 titles. As long as the more expensive 80 GB model is around with backward compatibility I wouldn't expect to see the 40 GB model get any PS2 emulation.

Check the compatibility website for the titles you care about.

Oddly enough I found more compatiblity issues with the 60gb than the 80gb for a few titles [which I suspect is most likly a data entry bug].

I don't know of every little detail, but generally:

To save manufacturing costs, the 40GB PS3 was stripped of a few things, including extra USB ports, card reader slots, and necessary hardware and software to support PS2 games. This is why the 40GB console is $100 cheaper than the 80GB, not because of the smaller hard drive.

The 20 and 60GB PS3s where the only models that included the Emotion Engine chip, the PS2's CPU, and are no longer produced. The 80 GB provides backwards compatibility through software emulation, but still has the PS2 GPU onboard. [Perfect] software emulation on the 40GB is likely impossible since the GPU is absent.

Sony has commented that their focus with the PS3 is to shift to PS3 exclusive gaming. The release of the 40GB was paired with the release of a new PS2 model, the idea being that consumers wishing to play PS1/2 games can continue to enjoy them through the PS2.

If you look at it the price of a new PS2 + 40GB PS3 roughly equals the price of an 80GB PS3.

Yeah I had a 20gb ps3 that i purchased back at launch ( just for BD movies and the old ps2 games i still play every once in awhile). I also purchased the warranty on it, not knowing if the ps3 was going to suffer from the same problems as the ps2. Luckily the PS3 is pretty solid, and I really havent heard of any hardware problems with it yet. But, I just happened to be in EB a few months back and had asked what would happen if the 20gb I owned "broke", how would they replace it? They said they would just swap it out for another model, based upon what i paid for my 20gb. Sooooo, I took my 20gb in with the receipt a month or so ago, and swapped it for the 80gb ( with free motorstorm) at no cost to me! This way i still get the ps2 backwards compatibility, and i gain a bigger HD, built in wifi, and card reader ports. woot!

NO, just keep your PS2. Sony has admitted they phased out PS1 to early. PS2 is still alive and kicking with millions sold since the PS3 was introduced. PS3 compatibility with PS2 games is not necessary.

Keep or pick up a PS2 cheap.

PS2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
