PS3 versus other players, what am I missing

I use my old fat ps3 as a blu-ray player, I always see lots of posts about OPPO players that costs up to and beyond $1000.

What about these players justifies the extra cost, better audio, video, features?

I just want to understand what benefits there are in owning one versus just continuing to use my PS3.

A few things, but the mojer thing is that it contains a scaler chip called the ABT2010 chip by Anchor Bay, which I hear does wonders with DVDs, as well as more sophisticated DACs in the multichannel analog outputs. The build on the Oppos feel like they are built to last.

One reason I would get an Oppo is that they feature subtitle placement, which is very useful if you own a 2.35:1 wide screen or TV; It is very useful if you watch foreign films (Sony has been spotty with this before). Few Players offer this despite it being mostly software based.

So it can upscale DVD's better than the PS3, I thought the receiver does this as well does the OPPO just do a better job than most receivers can?

Is DVD upscaling and subtitle placement the only benefits, if I dont use subtitles and my receiver can upscale DVD's will an OPPO not benefit me?

It's really which does the scaling better, the player or the receiver/scaler. Fixed pixel displays always show the resolution it is (1080p display is always a 1080p display) If you let the player do the scaling, you don't take advantage of the scaler from either the receiver or TV. Anyone setting a resolution on their DVD player is already letting the player do the scaling. (480i) signals are considered it's resolution and can benefit from the scalers used in either the TV or the receiver. If your scaler/receiver does it better than the OPPO (usually cost more than the oppo) there isn't a reason to get the OPPO for upconverting, may as well be another blu ray player.

In many ways, Oppo blu ray players do scaling excellently, but the PS3 ain't a slouch either. It is made for home theater enthusiests who demand more from their movie collection. If you use a TV and mostly digital audio, I don't see much of a reason to go Oppo other than brand name.

Ok thanks, good info, Those OPPO players do look really cool too but I guess I will hold off until I really see the need for some of the stuff you guys mentioned.
