What do you all think about For All Mankind? Both the film and the blu-ray disc.

No brainer - especially for the $20 it is now on AMZ. Turn on the subs the first time, and it ID's who is talking.

Still need to watch these. I think it might have been my request for WR and anything else by Makavejev that got the ball rolling a few years before Criterion put them out. WR seemed such a weird movie to me back in 1972, one of the first foreign films I ever saw. I requested it partly because I just wanted to see it again, and partly to see how the intervening years may have changed my perspective on things. Wilhelm Reich and his orgone box and people running around naked is about all I remember about it. Feel free to blame me or thank me or call me crazy or ignore me for WR's release and/or for the others, whichever you prefer.

Besides WR, the only other of his films I've seen to date have been Montenegro and The Coca-Cola Kid. So many movies, so little time.

I don't think so. While I can't prove that you're wrong, I work with various cable networks and a BD isn't even part of their deliverable lists. They get virtual files or they get "master" tapes. That's not to say that the same master that Criterion used wasn't also sent to TCM, but it wasn't a Blu-ray disc.

I was referring to the master, not a bd disc.

Well...since most of us are too busy drinking coffee to post, I'll feedback on a recent rental.

"Ace in the Hole"...a Billy Wilder film that reminds me of "Sweet Smell of Success", as far as the tenacity and cynicism of the lead actors.

I enjoyed it and this wouldn't be a bad choice for a move to blu in the future.

I had a dream last night about Criterions, I was in Barnes and Noble and my gut told me to pick up House. They were having a 50% off sale and I stacked a coupon. After completing my transaction the cashier asked if I wanted to grab some dinner. I immediately woke up after that.

I'm not a fan of it..... It's more due to the fact that I'm not hugely interested in the subject matter.

As far as technical aspects.... a lot of it looks rough, but if you're interested in the subject matter, that shouldn't make a difference.

Forgot to comment here, but I blind-bought Amarcord and watched it a few weeks ago, and wow, I really liked it. I can definitely see myself watching it multiple times, so I'm glad I picked it up. And man, that Gradisca is a bombshell.

I haven't seen the Blu-ray, but I must admit that I don't find the film particularly enjoyable or captivating. For me the only great thing about it is the music by Brian Eno, which I love, but I'd rather just listen to the soundtrack on its own. I think I probably would have liked it better if it had been less talking and more Baraka.

what would have been more ironic, is if she asked you to have dinner at her aunt's house...

This actually kind of happened to me for real during the sale. I remember posting something about it when it first happened, but during the B&N sale I bought 4 Criterions at a store in Columbus (Easton FTW), and the girl there was about my age, but she wasn't exactly someone I was interested in. Still, she told me how Breathless was one of her favorite movies (one of the ones I had picked out), and we chatted for a little bit, and she just effortlessly stacked the $5 off coupons with the discount while we talked. She didn't ask me to go to dinner, though.

I can see that...

If you're a NASA nut like myself, it's quite enjoyable to watch and it was not only my first CC DVD, but my first CC BD and really got me on the road to considering the other alternatives to "Hollywood" as far as classic/good cinema is concerned.

For All Mankind was the gateway drug??? Now I've heard it all!

La Dolce Vita was my "spark" into foreign film, classic film, etc... I watched it in Junior-High-School if I'm not mistaken.... (although I didn't run out to view everything I could.... but the interest stayed with me)

For All Mankind is an interesting one in terms of I still can't figure out what I think about it. On the one hand, I liked hearing things in the participant's own words (particularly utilizing the subtitles trick mentioned earlier), and I liked the footage used. At the same time I could quite help but feel that the whole thing simply felt like a scrapbook project. As a consumable history, For All Mankind does the job. As an enjoyable documentary--well, viewer mileage will vary.

I thought For all Mankind was great. I do enjoy anything about history though. Some of the shots on blu-ray were amazing.

Hey...to each his own Big Boy!

I was into other "cultured" films before this, this was just a backdoor into the world of Criterion.
