Good News i'm very happy with Warner's desicion to include PCM from now and on,and i would like to use all the 50GB on BD.

you know why they have choose Superman Returns on HD-DVD as a top Surround titles because it includes DolbyTHD,what if Superman Returns used the PCM compressed sound and maximise the VC_1 codec to the fullest of BD50.

the Result will be unbelievable and exceed the HD-DVD version.

I think I would prefer AVC, but I guess an optimized Blu-ray version of VC-1 would be nice (even though VC-1 codes that are ported over to BD should be the same as their HD DVD counterparts).

By the time they realised PCM would have been the better choice, it would have meant postponing the Blu-ray release. They didn't want to do that.

Could that be due to what HD DVD player do with to data after it is decoded? Or perhaps a total lack of care in the quality of the PCM going into the TrueHD encoder?

Being a computer geek, my gut says that things should be identical. Lossless means bit identical to the original. So, I conclude either the original is crap, or the HD DVD insistence of futzing with the bits is to blame.

Audio-wise, HD DVD seems like a total disaster.

Cool signature Gary.

I can't wait for The Matrix trilogy to come out on Blu-ray with PCM.

I wonder if The Departed will be 16/48 or 24/48?

Finally Warner has woken up and smelled the coffee. Hopefully they do this for all of their releases. BD-50 with PCM... Yummy!

Probably 16/48. Doing 24/48 would cut into capacity and bandwith.

Uncompressed 24/48 audio has a 50% larger file size than 16/48.

Yes, the PCM track is good news but my question is why not DoblyTrueHD. Does not DTHD use less space then PCM? And is not PCM a lossey sound track unlike DTHD. I think I might be confused here.

THD is half the space of PCM. But I believe Warner is using encoders that are written by Microsoft that are geared towards HD-DVD. While the encoder works with THD for HD-DVD, it doesn't work with BD. THD for BD may have to be re-encoded. So far only one title has THD on BD.

The other reason is that Warner is following the suggestions of the BD supporters that they do PCM instead of THD, since most of the BD players out there do not have THD decoding capability.

Warner will likely be using VC-1 though, so the bandwidth and capacity should be just fine.

TrueHD takes a PCM track and losslessly compresses it. The end result when decoded will be the original PCM track.

PCM is lossless.

TrueHD is a lossless encoding of an LPCM soundtrack. The same soundtrack Warner can simply use directly on Blu-ray.

Great, finally some PCM support!

Anyone know if Blood Diamond is coming to Blu-Ray. I watched the movie a couple days ago, and I was just amazed. Definately one of the best movies I've ever seen!

Gary

I heard that MS's THD encoder was no good, which could be why THD has not lived up to PCM yet, hopefully when SPE get round to using THD we will get Dolby's own encoder, not some MS hack.

Oh and another thing, the MS encoder is not compatible with Blu-ray, which could be why we haven't seen THD on BD.
