Thank god these films will be spread across two discs! I was really worried for a bit that WB would try and cram these on one. Hopefully, this will result in wonderful quality. I was, for the most part, happy with the Theatrical video quality, but there were definitely areas that needed improvement. Hopefully these will be rectified here.

the PQ issues of the theatrical BDs have nothing to do with compression or disc authoring... they are souce-material related and reflect the image quality of the digital intermediates (and filtering choices made prior to compression... there was some debate about some noise reduction done in advance of AVC compression).

If the EE versions can be transparently compressed to fit on a single disc each, then it's not an issue. And if they can't, then they should be put on two discs. The folks who are calling the shots on that decision will make the right decision based on the real-world results of compression AB comparisons. But whichever way the films get authored, the source-material problems will no-doubt be blamed on poor compression/authoring.

I fully understand that. My issues with the PQ have nothing to do with the source material. I'm perfectly fine with FotR looking a tad soft, etc. There were just some scenes here and there where WB obviously applied some additional DNR (inside Bag End, for instance). I don't know if having more room for these films will encourage them be less DNR-trigger happy (probably not, they're not inter-related). Regardless, I believe these films would have suffered from compression issues on one disc, so I'm happy they're split up.

As its been mentioned, the dvds are 6.1 DTS-ES discrete.....

Am I reading this right

Amazon already has over 850 reviews of which over 600 reviews were written since the pre-orders started about a week ago.
http://www.amazon.com/Rings-Trilogy-.../dp/B0026L7H20

Assuming there were ten times as many sales ... imagine how much money Warner Brothers made already with that price tag and here I am waiting for the price to go down to $75

lol, maybe I should just get it assuming the quality of the Blu-ray will be nothing less than perfect looking at all the money they are making and the crazy demand for it. They better not disappoint us this time and release it ASAP in summer ... I can't wait till Semtember or December.

Is it the highest pre-ordered Blu-ray set ever on Amazon yet ?

I would think that Star Wars probably has it beat, but I'm not sure.
Star Wars has never been released on blu-ray, and it also has a release date!

Not to mention the fact that SW 6 film set is so close in price to LOTR's 3 film set. I'm sure the combined sales of both LOTR sets would rival the SW films, though(especially since thousands aren't going to get SW without the original cuts whereas LOTR have the extended cuts fanboys have been screaming for for ages).

why don't they divide the films over three discs? i wouldnt want the quality to be limited even a little bit but cramming the films onto two discs.

With that rationale, and demand for a 4K scan, that could be stretched way past the point of ridicilousGuess you're being ironic here

Me too. Blu-ray discs hold a lot of data so they need to take advantage of that. I didnt mind the flip with the DVD EE set but I dont expect to have to do that with blu-rays.

i would personally prefer if they did something similar to toy story 3 where they had the film by itself on one disc with only the primary audio and then on another disc is the features and the film with the commentaries.

Maybe he can fix a few other things as well, like a certain scene in ROTK.

I hope he doesn't turn into George Lucas.

Come on, man - you know they're going to fix that. Buy the EE's now, because Jackson is indeed going to go Lucas on the films for the UE's.
Great minds think alike.

Shortly after the movies came out there was an article on the web about why LOTR would have to be remade someday, which goes along nicely with what you say.

Or the BBC radio adaptation, which is MUCH closer to the books.

So I'm fine if it's on two discs for A/V quality reasons as well.

If someone would make a multi-disc BD player, that wouldn't be a problem.
