I try to watch as many Criterion films as I can, whether I purchase or rent them. I sometimes find myself feeling that something must be wrong with me when I watch one that so many other people rave about, and I dislike it. Recently I caught 400 Blows, and while it was good, I don't think I could watch it again. I guess I am not educated enough on the significance of the French new wave.

I guess I am not "Criterion Cool".

There are so many films in the catalog that I won't touch due to not being interested. The ones I want are ridiculously expensive (Thin Red Line, Che), so that's another downside. I'm still waiting for The Royal Tenenbaums and the Life Aquatic.

I'm really excited about Kiss Me Deadly and Insignificance! Although I've only ever seen parts of Insignificance I'll probably be purchasing it.

Also nice to finally see some Ichikawa on CC blu. I hope we see The Burmese Harp in the near future for those that are region B challenged.

I don't think they totally nailed it but it's not as far off as you're making it sound.
I get what they're trying to do. It just looks like it was designed in 5 minutes

To put this easy for blind-buying people or people who doesn't know (again this is only to help out those who questioned):

What I would call "must haves": Kiss Me Deadly and People on Sunday

Everything else are lesser-known or what people call "not the director's best" films. The 2 Malle films are cult-like though, so if you like blind-buying, these would be your best bet.

The Eclipse set I haven't seen, which is why I am so looking forward to it.

I'm looking at Criterion's Blu-Ray website trailers to see if I can find anything that interests me. 3rd down from the top, I found "Au revoir les enfants", which is a movie I actually caught most of on TCM this Summer, and had forgotten the title since then. God that is a great film. Can someone tell me what the title means in English? I'm assuming Goodbye something? Farewell Childhood, maybe?

I feel the same way about some Criterion titles. Some examples: M and The Third Man. I didn't dislike them, but I wasn't exactly crazy about them. I know they were very influential films, but I wouldn't watch them over and over. I actually felt the same way about The 400 Blows too.

"Goodbye Children"

The "les" denotes the plural for Child "Enfant" and well.... Au Revoir is just a formal "Goodbye" from my French years...

P@t couldn't help you because he's French-Canadian, so it means "Peace Out-Kiddos" to him

I find "M" and "The Third Man" to be the most universally enjoyed films when I show them to others (wife, Father-in-law, etc) because although they are technically great (camera usage in The Third Man, and imagery in "M" for instance) they follow plot lines that are fairly straight forward or at least comparable to other films many have seen...... I like those two films as examples of stories that may be done repeatedly, but the technical aspects of them make them special to their given genres....

The 400 Blows is something I somewhat agree with you on.... very enjoyable, but I have many more 'essentials' in the way of French-new-wave that I prefer over it.

It's funny, M and The Third Man have become two of my favorite titles but I didn't get all the way through either of them the first time around. I didn't think either was bad, I just got distracted and wasn't compelled to get right back to them.

I'm glad to see that others helped you out, but aren't there plenty of free language translation services online these days? I know it would take me two clicks to make it over to Google Translator.

I have 3 Criterion blu-rays which had damaged cases when I purchased them. I emailed Jon Mulvaney today. What does Criterion do in this situation? WIll they send the cases for free?
