Arrow Pacific Rim (2013)

I can only say I was very happy to be able to develop it under the radar in many ways. People got it confused with the Godzilla movie a few months ago but we cleared that up. I can say the scope and imagination that have been outlined in it are absolutely appealing to me. I cannot say more, it’s not the time.

The idea is unequivocally to start shooting in September. The terms of that will become public very soon, but the idea is to get behind the camera this year. I miss it terribly. Unfortunately for me, I have passed discreetly on a number of high profile projects last year in order to save myself for a project that I’ve been shepherding. That was Mountains, and now it seems like it’s going to be Pacific Rim. In both instances, these are projects I am generating.
As for Pacific Rim, here’s a press release on that production confirming a few details:

Legendary Pictures announced today that Guillermo del Toro is directing the company’s upcoming feature, Pacific Rim, confirmed as his next film. The film has already entered pre-production and will begin principal photography in September 2011. Pacific Rim will be released during summer 2013 and will be produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni for Legendary Pictures and Guillermo del Toro.

Stated Guillermo del Toro:
Quote:
We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me.
Yes, At the Mountains of Madness sounded amazing. Yes, we’re all super bummed that Guillermo del Toro is no longer making the film. Yes, we should all curse out Universal for not allowing the possibility of an R-rating, despite the movie being a hugely risky financial undertaking that could have very easily bombed at the box office and lost them a ton of money.

Moving right along.

Guillermo del Toro is officially committed to directing Pacific Rim, a PG-13 monster movie for Legendary Pictures that’s set for a Summer 2013 release. It’s no At the Mountains of Madness, but it could end up being a halfway decent consolation prize — especially now that plot details have been unveiled that clarify what specifically the movie is about. In a nutshell: It sounds insane. Read all about it after the break.

Here’s what we know about Pacific Rim thus far: It’s scripted by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), and features “big monsters and the creation of a new world”. Other than that, all we know about the story is what’s described in the below logline.

Quote:
Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.
That’s about as vague a pitch as you can get, and doesn’t do much to differentiate the film from a dozen or so other sci-fi monster movies. News in Film intends to correct this though, providing the inside scoop on what they’re claiming to be the plot of Pacific Rim.

Reading this synopsis, the Godzilla reboot confusion suddenly becomes so very clear.

Quote:
This project will give the Hellboy filmmaker the opportunity to create two worlds. The first is an alternate version of Earth in the near future, decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first kaiju, a towering Godzilla-like beast, emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. The second is “The Anteverse,” another universe on the other side of that gaping portal, 5 miles below our ocean’s surface. Since the first attack, the rim has been “spitting out” a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the “Jaeger” program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry.
So, in essence, Pacific Rim is akin to what The Mist would’ve been had the focus been on the military — and had the characters not been engulfed by mist for the entire time. We even get to see “several different species of towering kaiju, each with their own unique characteristics”. The movie also has a touch of Avatar to it, adding in its own epic-scaled mech suit battles, along with a heavily detailed, fully fleshed out universe (which includes a newly developed glossary and lingo to reflect the changes in this futuristic world).

As for the film’s characters, the protagonist is a skilled mid-20s pilot who’s struggling with the loss of his brother. Recruited to re-join the task force in Tokyo, he finds himself teamed with an inexperienced female Japanese pilot, which causes a whole new set of problems due to the language barrier. Also in the mix is the fiancée of the protagonist’s brother, who’s a journalist looking to unravel the mystery behind the rift and its origins. More detailed descriptions of these characters can be found at News in Film.

There’s more, too. The article also refers to the “god-like Jaeger systems” and “shared neural piloting system (called ‘pons’)” found within the film, and frankly, I have no idea what any of it means. No matter; my interest has been sufficiently piqued. How about yours?

As sad as I am about 'At the Mountains of Madness', this sounds really cool so I can't wait to see what Del Toro does with it. It sounds like it has the chance to be something excellent.

Sounds cool. I'm still bummed about At the Mountains of Madness, but I'm also just glad he's going to be working on something soon.

Yea, agreed. I'm still upset about ATMOM, but any new del Toro is a good thing. And this just sounds like it's going to be really epic in scale, so I can't wait to see what he does with it. Maybe if it does well enough, we'll see him ramp up Hellboy III and ATMOM after.

Have to agree with you anything new for Toro is always good but it seems that everything he is attached to direct just fall thru at the last moment.

Ugh. Can he just direct the damn movies he's ALREADY SIGNED ON FOR? Christ, the studios must be getting pissed at him.

Slightly OT but do we know the status of the new Haunted Mansion movie he is working on?
Back OT I am quite interested to hear more about Pacific Rim. GDT can do no wrong in my books!

He's only producing it, but nothing has been heard from it since comic-con, but I guess it'll be coming, Disney seem to want to give it a big push.

Why? Do you not like del Toro? Not to mention this is the first del Toro directing somethig new thread we've had lately. 'At the Mountains of Madness' was an older thread that got resurrected by new news.

Have to agree all the Del Toro threads are either old or he's not directing them but producing or something else like Pinocchio and Haunted Mansion. Really looking forward to this movie as so far it sounds like a kick ass monster movie.

I think he means he wants a Del Toro film to actually get off the ground before it is announced, this has come off pretty fast after ATMOM.

Yeah I get that as he has announced a lot of projects but most haven't actually gotten anywhere. I think this project was always getting worked on and Del Toro wasnt going to direct but now that ATMOM is dead they offered him the job and he took it so that's why it's moving fast. Could be wrong though as I haven't read up to much on this film.

It's probably one of the ones he signed onto a while back, he did get a lot of films just before he was signed on to The Hobbit and they were all put on hold. This was probably just the next one in the pipe. But I dunno, I haven't read much on it either

Yeah I've been keeping an eye of Del Toro news and never even heard of this movie and all of a sudden ATMOM dies and this is his next directing gig over all the other movies he has in pre/production so it must have been a secret movie or something.

I know. Between At the Mountains of Madness and The Hobbit, I've been a very sad GTD fan...I was really looking forward to his version of The Hobbit, I'm still a bit more upset about that then At the Mountains of Madness...But that's just because I love The Hobbit. Hopefully this one actually makes it to production and actually comes out. I need a new GTD movie now before I burn out my blus of his other films.

To be fair, most of the things hes signed on for fall through. I mean, he waited for two years to direct The Hobbit before he walked because he kept having to turn down jobs and he couldn't wait any longer. Then he was going to do At the Mountains of Madness and that fell through. As long as he gets something off the ground, I'll be happy.

He had been developing this one under the radar for a while, but he wasn't sure if he was going to direct it or not. But then Universal killed At the Mountains of Madness, and they jumped at hte chance to get him to sign on and direct it. They were going to try to convince him to do Pacific Rim before At the Mountains of Madness to begin with, if the rumors were in fact true. But seeing as how Universal killed the project, they didn't have to beg or give him a ton of money to do it. He needed a new project, and this happened to be one he had been helping develop to produce. I'm just glad he was able to get a project so fast because as I've stated, I love GTD and I'm tired of not getting a new movie by him.

Looks like Warner wants rewrites for the script after the Japan quake and it seems like they wanted Del to turn this into the new Godzila movie but he refused. This movie has always reminded me of Godzila though.

I thought Legendary already had a new Godzilla film in the pipeline with the guy who did Monsters? Or am I remembering incorrectly? Or was it a timing thing (I can't access that article here at work)?

No they do have a Godzilla movie in the works with the director of Monsters but it seems they are still hoping Del Toro will write/direct it.

Ah, okay. It sure seems like Del Toro can't catch a break when it comes to his projects in development.
