Oops, just realized I made a couple of mistakes here: 1) the biggie was I mis-read ShellOilJunior's original post about this...it was 10 total, not 10 in each category, and 2) it doesn't matter now, but I had accidentally left Andrei Rublev on the upgrade list when I was culling it to 10....realized this reading repete66211's post above. I think it is an okay film, and I originally had it because I want to see more Russian/Soviet-era upgrades from the collection. But truth be told I meant to replace it with Le Samourai. So it is with tearful regret I must eliminate Ulzana's Raid, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Battle of Algiers, etc., (as well as my intended Le Samourai) to get my new 10 total films list: Gallipoli Go Tell the Spartans (late career Burt Lancaster, overlooked gem about Vietnam) The Year of Living Dangerously Day of the Jackal Mountains of the Moon (a film by Bob Rafelson) Soldier of Orange (Dutch version) The Ascent The Cranes Are Flying The Spy Who Came in From the Cold Night Train to Munich Last edited by oildude; 03-18-2011 at 01:45 AM. |

Please give me your 10 most wanted Criterion Blu-rays. Selections may be new spines or catalog upgrades.
New Numbers: 1.) Nobody's Fool (Benton, 1995) 2.) Come and See (Klimov, 1985) 3. Grave of the Fireflies (Takahata, 1988) 4.) I Walk Alone (Haskin, 1948) 5.) The Verdict (Lumet, 1982) Upgrades: 1.) Tokyo Story (Ozu, 1953) 2.) Late Spring (Ozu, 1948) 3.) Ace in the Hole (Wilder, 1951) 4.) Elevator to the Gallows (Malle, 1958) 5.) Down by Law (Jarmusch, 1986) Under the new spines...I hope that we see more Newman on blu and The Verdict (Fox) is one of his best. I have a special love for Nobody's Fool, as it's not only a touching Newman film, but most of it was filmed in the "town" where I have lived for the last 18 years. I Walk Alone is a great noir that I just watched for the first time this week. Great performances by both Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. Under upgrades...Where the hell is the first Ozu blu? It's overdue. I've been collecting the BFIs as they are being released, but both Tokyo Story and Late Spring have great supplemental material, that I'd like to have in HD. We're due for more Jarmusch and Down by Law is a great film. |

Have not seen this one yet, but will keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the recommendation. This makes me realize how subconciously Burt Lancaster must be one of my favorite actors, since he is in so many movies I really like. Never thought about that until now. There are his more mainstream movies for which he was nominated for Academy Awards and won one I think (for Elmer Gantry), but also a slew of lesser known gems. Ulzana's Raid was, at the time of it's release, one of the most gritty and graphic westerns since Sam Peckinpah, but I think is mostly forgotten now. Same with Go Tell the Spartans, which was pretty low budget and Lancaster took reduced salary - and contributed his own money when the budget ran short - but is one of the best Vietnam moves ever made, in my opinion. It had the misfortune to be released the same year as the Deer Hunter. |

I don't know. Considering how few movies he's done over the years I think we're pretty lucky to have one Jarmusch. Personally Night on Earth is my favorite. I would really love to see Criterion do that one. |
