50 Mbit/s?

I've notice on both POTC:AWE and The day after tomorrow that it actually hit 50 Mbit/s how is this possible? I thought the limit of Blu-ray was 48 MBit/s...

Yeah, I've noticed this with Nature's Journey... I think the Bitrate meter for the PS3 is not perfectly accurate, as it the limit IS 48Mbps.

As I understand it, Blu-ray is capable of video bursts of well above 40mbps (the other 8 are reserved for audio data). That might account for the metering.

If the audio instantaneous bitrate is lower, a 50Mbps segment is possible. There is a clip (Elephant Dreams from MSFT) where 12 seconds was consistently averaging 50Mbps continuously. The audio was merely 256kbps. That clip plays on a PS3 if you put it on a 8X DVD-R media in BDMV/AVCHD format.

I know for a fact in a couple of scenes it runs around 41+.

I actually have quite a few movies that show the video exceeding 40Mbps... I watched Cast Away the other night, and that certainly was over that almost on a regular basis.

I've also seen the video bitrate peak at 50 Mbps on the remastered version of The Fifth Element, and others that I can't recall the names to.

Many times, well over 40 Mbps...

A second doesn't count as there is a buffer so a 1/2 secs of video using up 25Mb (= 50Mbps) is within specs if the last 1/2s is 15Mb (=30Mbps).
