Default Manchurian Candidate?

Anyone see this movie? Was it any good? Is it worth buying?

Hi. I have seen this film, it is a complex film, but is well done. Denzel Washington is great in this one, and Liev Schreiber also gives a good performance. If your not sure about getting the blu ray, I would suggest renting the dvd first. that way you'll know if you really want to buy it. For me, its definitely a buy.

Great movie, but the title is misleading?

I've seen both, the original with Laurence Harvey and Sinatra, and the 2004 remake. IMHO as a movie the original one was much better.
I'm gonna skip the remake, but if the oroginal ever comes out I'll pick it up even if it's BW.

I rarely say this about a Denzel film, but I thought this thing was terrible. It doesn't touch the original by any stretch of the imagination.

I highly recommend a rental first. That'll probably be the last word on the subject for a lot of people.

YMMV

Well, not to be too contrary, but I thought both stand up very well in their own rights, both artistically and philosophically. Then again, it's been a while since I saw the original. To me, the original is tied to the period in which it was made, but didn't feel as heavy-handed (probably because of today's audiences). While the remake may eventually fall to the same fate, it's got the pull of current events to give it weight.

Personally, I feel Denzel Washington was better than Sinatra, and that both Meryl Streep and Liev Schreiber at the very least match their 1962 counterparts.

I just bought it today. Its one of my favorite movies so I had to get it. The PQ is good but not the best i have seen. Still worth picking up if you like the movie though.

Hey, I just returned from wal-mart with a "TMC" and it has a completely different cover art then the version I always see and that is listed on this site, and i'm having a hard time finding this image anywhere. Anyone have any info on a re-release of some sort? Thanks.

I'll post a pic as soon as I get my camera to work.

Well at least it was $10, instead of jacking the price for a new cover.

Hell's to the yeah, Angela Lansbury was such a bad ass in the original! She was so hot back in the day IMO! Plus she still takes time to sign autographs, a class act all the way.

The stock image of this and Paramount promotional materials from back when it was released show a silver border on the front cover and the spine. Does anybody own this edition and can they take a picture of it to prove it exists? I'm in pursuit of it, and I want to make sure it's even real before I waste too much of my time. Here's what it looks like:

Note the silver border along the left side and top/bottom of the art.

The original Manchurian Candidate is a 5-stars-out-of-5 film imo. The blu-ray (released early this year as a Best Buy exclusive) is a good presentation of the film if that's all you're looking for (i.e., you're a fan of the film).

Manchurian Candidate is one of the best thrillers of the last ten years. Criminally underrated because of the revered original, in it's own right it is a brilliant film. Jonathan Demme brings character insight and creepy sexual perversion to the thriller genre, as he did with Silence Of The Lambs. He re-teams with Denzel (Philadelphia) and together they make a convincing portrayal of a disturbed mind growing increasingly paranoid, all set amongst a relevant political backdrop. I would say it's definitely worth buying.
