Default Disappointed by IMAX

My local Rave theater just converted one of their theaters into a IMAX so my girl friend and I decided do go check it out(we had never been to a IMAX). (watched sucker punch)The second we walked in my first thought was this screen is no bigger than the old screen they replaced. I thought IMAX was suppose to be huge! The quality was very good, better that the regular showings. But for the price I was not impressed. Then a buddies of mine text me and told me he had just got to the IMAX and said it was not a "real" IMAX that it was the smallest one he had seen.

I have been waiting for IMAX to get here and now that it is I am so disapointed.

It really grinds my gears when theaters slap IMAX on some newly remodeled room and charge you extra for the ticket.

Real IMAX theaters are HUGE! This sounds like a marketing nuisance on a smaller screen.

Yeah, that sounds dumb.

The only IMAX screens I've seen are the big real things, and they have been impressive. I'd suggest checking one out; don't let this cheap knockoff presentation dissuade you.

Good link This is our local one, it has been here for a LONG time (opened in 1990, I saw Blue Planet more than once that year)

Check this one out. It's only 5-10 minutes away from my house. http://www.santikos.com/palladiumex.php

Look at the virtual tours.

My mother was working for Dr. Pepper last summer, and they gave her 2 free tickets to see "Iron Man 2", so she took me to the theater. The passes were good for either standard or IMAX showings, so we decided to see what all the ravings were about. I was definitely impressed by the picture quality, but the sound was so loud! I had real trouble getting immersed in the movie, because every time something happened, my ears started hurting. I like movies a little loud, but not that much; as such, I strongly doubt I'll be seeing any film in IMAX anytime soon.

+1 I would be disappointed as well. I'd say the theater you went to is a knock-off (generic) version of IMAX and it was wrong for them to charge more. How much was each ticket?

You have just experienced LIEMAX. A liscening agreement between IMAX and theater chains to use their name to make money without providing the larger screen and larger format film.

We have a real IMAX here and it was pretty cool. It's just gotten so expensive (almost $20 per ticket) and almost everything is in 3D now, so I skip it altogether now.

That sucks.

Thank you Liselotte for the link though - I'll be sure not to see an Imax movie unless it's on a 1570 screen.

tickets were only $11 but i was expecting the REAL THING! not a fly by night remodel. i even second guessed it when they didnt add onto the theater just remodeled their biggest one.

everyones talking bout the audio being loud, yea it was loud but not over barring.

If it would have been a bigger screen i would have been very happy but as it is now i will not be seeing anything in IMAX unless i drive to another city which is not happening for a movie.

i looked at the link for the 1570 IMAX and we do have one at the naval aviation museum NAS pensacola but they dont show movies just those Documentaries like the Magic of flight.

The only non-documentary film I've seen at an IMAX theater was Star Trek. It was great. It was loud and you literally couldn't see the whole screen at once. I'm definitely going back to see the sequel if they're showing it.

We don't even have a LieMAX theater within 50 miles--
Only non-museum IMAX I've ever seen was going out to the Lincoln Center plex in NYC (back when there were only about 20 commercial real-IMAX theaters in the entire country), back when you had to make the "pilgrimage" to see Fantasia 2000...
And believe me, once you've been in a genuine real-IMAX theater from the pre-Lie days, you will know the difference when you go to one of the shallow pretenders. Talkin' about the theater as well as the screen.
