Greetings,
I don't own a denon receiver but if you want to know how high the db's you are getting, use a sound pressure level meter for a db reading. It will probably not be as loud as you think. As for the sub, it shouldn't be overpowering. Infact you shouldn't even know it is there.

This is how mine is setup after using the the setup microphone. It turned my sub to -4 and my center channel to +4 after starting everything at even. Now its sounds great and all speakers blend together !

Thats sorta what my opinion is. I'm no expert, but once you're able to detect which direction the bass is coming from, the woofer is too overpowering.

Also the sound system is too loud, when it's at a level that can cause hearing loss. Clarity is more important than feeling pressure waves come off your sound system & wincing because its hurting your ears. Quality over quantity sorta thing. I dont own one, but on those action scenes where you want to get into the action, a buttkicker may be better than having your sub cranked up to where it'll vibrate out your fillings.

my .02

The number is in decibels with zero being the reference level. Every change of 3db I believe is a doubling of the loudness.

How load is too loud - I try to keep it one db less than my wife coming down and threatening me for a divorce.

what he said about the SPL. Read that 90 db is beginning of unsafe levels.

Thanks for the input fellas! This confirms what I thought, we all watch our movies loud. Loud is best.

I don't think my sub is overpowering but its not hard to tell its behind my viewing position.

I'll start handing out ear-plugs for the weak.

I find the reference level at which calibration is performed to be uncomfortably loud. About 10dB lower than that is where I normally set it for movies. I use about 20-30dB lower for regular television (where surround and LFE effects aren't as important).
