Default Planet of the Apes (Tim Burton version) (Spoiler warning: discusses the ending)

I've seen this movie several times, and tonight on Blu Ray for the first time. I'm still confused as to the ending.

I understand pretty much everything except the ending?

Did Gen Thade travel back in time to earth, set up the Ape society?

Any theories?

He had to travel back through the magnetic storm, but the magnetic storm sent him to another alternate universe. Pretty trippy huh?

Yes, I think he went through the cloud back in time to Earth and changed our history.

The ending pretty much spoiled the movie for me. I don't mind an ending that you have to think about, but eventually...you "get it". With this one, there isn't just a clear answer to me. An alternate universe? Maybe..but the statue of Gen Thade...confuses that for me.

The reason that's the ending and why it's so confusing is because Tim Burton said it's supposed to be a cliffhanger not a twist. He had sequels in mind to answer those questions but since not alot of people liked the movie the sequels never happened.

Now I can understand that explanation. (Burton had sequels in mind, so it was a cliffhanger).
I think a trilogy would have been good. Doesn't look like that's going to happen now.

I've seen all five original (when I was a kid, I loved them!) and read the book. Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle (the English Translation of course). Burtons movie makes more sense after having read the book.
I watched it tonight as the football game on TV was blowout. (Georgia vs Hawaii)

The movie is the ending of the book, except it's Washington DC instead of Paris

The original DVD contained a booklet that explained everything. First monkey went into the time vortex BEFORE Mark Wahlberg, but came out AFTER. So Thade managed to travel back hundreds or thousands of years before Mark Wahlberg arrived, and used his advanced DNA to breed a race of super apes on earth and take over

So Mark returned to a different point in time

In the book, they travel to an earthlike planet found orbiting Betelgeuse, relativity being as it is, hundreds of years pass in-between. Escape from the planet of the apes reversed to human in an ape society and the Heston movie combined are basically what the book is.

Burton's movie bears no resemblence to the book except for that ending whatsoever
Long story short, hero returns with Nova and their son on his spaceship, lands in a Paris ruled by apes because we helped them advance toa point they could take over.

I consider Tim Burton to be a brilliant filmmaker. However, his version of "Planet of the Apes" was a major disappointment (understatement). I was hoping that he would use the 1968 version as the basis for a much more brutal depiction of the ape society than the filmmakers were able to portray in the original version.

On a side note, this year will be the 40th Anniversary of the original "Planet of the Apes" I predict a Bllu-ray version will make its debut before the end of the year.

Too bad Burton didn't follow the orginal book, we could have had an entirely refreshed series.

I'd get a Blu ray version of the original POTA, but not sure about any of the sequels.

Don't get why they didn't do sequals. The movie weren't THAT bad! I see far worse movies, which gets their sequals!
Far worse movies that have a far higher ROI for the studio

What messes Tim Burton's version of Planet Of The Apes for me is the orange paint on the branding iron. The blu-ray looks so good I can tell it's orange paint and not actually hot... That sucks...

Well.. POTA has to be on a super high level for people to get into it I think. OR high stylized. I think that was missing the most Burton's style.

However, it made a good chunk of cash in the box office and was very profitable:

Made 362,211,740 million. I would like to see 2 more
