I can't speak for him, but one of my issues with 3D, is the 'blurred' effect I see... it's not the background, it's the foreground.... and it's not the "cardboard cut-outs over a background" you're referring to, because I've seen that on demos, and that wasn't it. It looked 'blurred' to me... don't know how else to describe it.

It was a 64" Plasma, with Active Shutter glasses.... (I think it was a Samsung, but I can't remember, I'd have to ask him) I am guessing we were 7-8' from the screen (if I was forced to guess...)

I mentioned that he calibrated his screen with a disc, not professionally....

either way, "blurred" is all I can say.... I watched a few things I own on Blu-ray too, just to get a gauge of how nice his T.V. was, and it all looked amazing.... so I don't think his settings after calibration could possibly make that much of a difference from 2D to 3D, but I could be wrong.

We were watching Coraline and also The Last Airbender (terrible by the way!)

I agree that on the odd occasion 3d does produce a blurry effect that's not to easy on the eyes, but I think that's more to do with certain content not the tv, in my experience (other than ghosting) I haven't really come across many situations where I have seen a blurry effect except for in panasonics and samsungs 3d demo discs (which is not good because they use those demos to promote 3d in stores). It could also have something to do with 1st generation 3dtv's, flaws are to be expected from any 1st gen product (2nd gen are only starting to roll out now, I'm sure most people haven't seen them in motion yet, but apparently 3d effects are better this time around), I think people are forgetting that, and are treating 3dtv tech as if it has been around for years, when it's only new.

Here in Australia (I assume they use it overseas as well) Samsung have a 3d demo disc with a 3d clip of the black eyed peas performing, and I will say that when I watched that 3d video, it did look a bit blurry. As I said in the above paragraph though, that would most likely be because of the content, not the tv itself.

I was so excited to see Avatar in 3D at the (non-IMAX) theater, because I hadn't seen 3D (other than IMAX) since Jaws 3 back in the early 80's I think. I couldn't wait to see how much of an improvement had been made in 3D tech since then. I was also thinking this may be what spurs me to go ahead and get the glasses and the 3D blu-ray player. If it had come even close to the IMAX experience for me... I would have loved it and probably made all the tech improvements needed to bring it into the home.... but for me personally it was just meh. I found it distracting and by about 30 minutes in I was thinking how much more I would have enjoyed the move in 2D.
Hi robinandtami,

I realize you posted this a while back, but I wanted to make a quick comment on it. Probably the best 3D experience I had was in an IMAX theater in 1999 or so - watching a film called "T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous". The movie itself was nothing special, but the 3D was amazing. This IMAX theater used electronic shutter glasses - just like the ones available to home consumers today. Over the last few years I've gone to the theater for a few 3D films, all using the passive approach. It's been a bit hit and miss, but more often than not, the theater experiece has been dim and blurry and failed to measure up.

Earlier this month I was able to get my hands on one of Optoma's 3D-XL adapters for 3D DLP projection and it IS the IMAX experience at home. The first film we watched with this set up was Warner Bros' IMAX Blu-Ray 3D of DEEP SEA 3D and it was incredible. Seaweed was hitting me in the face and fish were swimming around my living room. I never would have imagined that I'd be able to have something comparable to the 3D IMAX experience in my own home within my lifetime, but it is here - - - - and PS3 aside, the projector and adapter cost under $1000. We're projecting at 125" and have thrown every Blu-Ray 3D release we could get our hands on at it - there is not a speck of ghosting or cross talk - but the pop-out effects are clearly dependent on the film (or game) itself. So anyone looking to jump into 3D at home, if your happy with your current TV, I'd suggest keeping it and go with a projector for the the 3D WOW factor. It really makes watching these films an "event"!

Just looked up the 3D-XL adapter. It seems like a great new innovation allowing 3D capable projectors to be connected directly to a 3D blu-ray player. Only problem I saw with that was the resolution. On Optoma's website, it states that it is 720p Full HD. I wish it was 1080p like my 3D blu-rays. I guess they will come up with a 1080p adapter sooner or later. On projection screen bigger than 100' it is well worth watching movies in Full 1080p..

I wouldn't let 720p put you off. It looks great. 3D projected at 125" @ 720p blows away 3D in 1080p at 55" (and even trumps every theatrical 3D presentation I've been to in the last few years). Add in the fact that crosstalk is not an issue and it really seems to be the way to go. And the price is the icing on the cake. Friends have come over and their jaws hit the floor when they see this thing in action.

We have a 1080p HDTV too - and even for 2D, we opt for projecting at 720p when we want to make watching an "event". Estimates for 1080p 3D projectors were priced in the 6K - 12K price range last time I checked (maybe that has changed? I haven't been paying attention...). We have the Optoma HD66 projector and for the money it is a good little bugger - there are plenty of reviews and screenshots out there.

BTW: 2x 3DXLs can be used with 2 projectors for a 1080p passive set-up, but I'm happy with what we have.

The 3D-XL is sold out worldwide right now which sucks for those waiting for it, but seems to bode well for the future of 3D. Demand far exceeded Optoma's initial estimates. A new shipment is supposed to go out to retailers mid-April.

I found this interesting, retailers cutting bait on 3D while the manufacturers bicker

Thanks for the info. I currently down own a home so it will be a while before I think of investing in a projector. I am hoping that by that time (5-10 years), 3D projectors will get much cheaper and passive technology gets good enough where you can project a 1080p 3D image on a 120' + projector screen and not lose any resolution with the polarize glasses. Until then, I'm satisfied with a 50' 3D plasma.

My uncle keeps making fun of 3D ever since I've purchased my 3DTV. It's not my fault he payed $1800 for a 50'' 720p plasma 3 years ago. He was bragging about it back then.

I think people who hate 3dtvs a lot are just angry at the fact they JUST spent so much on HDTV (finally jumping on the bandwagon) to know they need an ENTIRELY NEW setup.

Default 3D a fad?

Are 3D TV's and Blu-Rays a fad or are they here to stay? I have no interest in buying 3D TV's or Blu-Rays, so I hope it doesn't take over

It won't "take over." However, 3D TV technology is here to stay. Within 2 years, every TV manufactured will be 3D capable. But, the nice thing about them is that 3D is never going to be forced on the user. The TV has a button that can turn 3D on or off for ANY content.

Personally I really do not think people are really into 3D as a whole but eventually every TV will most likely be 3D capable, whether people use this feature or not will determine how much 3D continues to grow for in home use. Personally I think it's cool but really don't care whether I get it or not, and I think that's most people's stand on it. That attitude does not sell TV's.

Actually, if you think about it, there will be a consumer attitude that WILL give the 3D industry (hardware) a running start. The gaming industry will help propel the industry into expanding substantially.

The main reason I will be dropping $3000+ on a 60"+ 3D TV in August/September is to be able to play Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception in full 1080p 3D glory!

Gaming sold me on a 3DTV.

Though I do enjoy watching 3D movies with my wife who really enjoys all the animated titles that are out.

Default 3D is here to stay

3D is just part of the natural evolution of visiual and audiosonic media, most people would agree that the development of new forms of media are driven by the adult film industry. The same people tend to forget the military industrial complex's role in this development, and lastly it is entertainment and gaming.Take a look at "Brainstorm",or a holodeck for the livingroom in the future perhaps ?

Right now it's a hodgepodge of fads that targets early adopters. Eventually there will be some sort of 3D standard (which doesn't require glasses for one thing) that will settle in.
