Yes, it seems to me that Warner has taken the "cheap route" here, with movies that deserve the very best treatment. One thinks they could have done better, but again, if they threw in the kitchen sink now, there would be little need for the "ultimate deluxe" (or whatever) edition that we will be buying in a couple of years.

Just because they might be going the "cheap route" with the bonus features, doesn't mean they're going the "cheap route" with the movies.

Considering the A/V will be the exact same no matter if the special features are on blu rays or dvds, I dont see this as a big deal at all. Sure it would be a cleaner package which would be nice, but this is a very minor issue to what should otherwise be a fantastic set. From everything I have seen and read about this release, it sure doesnt look like a "cheap set" to me.

Same old tired arguement...

Everyone must remember that all of the extra features were filmed in SD. So, there is no reason to put them on a Blu-ray disc if it costs more to do so.

#1. EXTRAS WILL BE ON DVDs.
#2. THOSE DVDs WILL BARELY BE AFFECTING THE CASE SIZES.
#3. GET OVER IT

Don't bother. If they'd put them on Blu-rays, then there would be complaining about the fact that there aren't any new features...

The end credits for ROTK has production art in the background which changes every few seconds, while the fan credits have a static shot of the ring. Don't forget that the credits music is still playing too, which in DTS-HD MA is eating up those bits.

Not sure if this is the right spot for this but Blockbuster Canada has started pre-orders in its stores, and the pre-order price is $69.99. Cheaper than Amazon.ca/.com for those who are interested. Pre-ordered mine today

#1. OK then, how about offering the option to just buy the movies without umteen SD special features discs that many, perhaps most of the people who are going to buy this set already have?
#2. The case sizes may not be affected, but how about the price?
#3. Is it worth lambasting someone over such a trivial issue compared to perhaps somewhat larger matters such as war, disease, sorrow (suffering in general), and of course the inevitability of death loom on the horizon for us all? Really?

Is it worth it for everybody to be griping about this stuff on the forum when it's such a trivial issue compared to perhaps somewhat larger matters such as war, disease, sorrow (suffering in general), and of course the inevitability of death looming on the horizon for us all?

I'll let you think about that for a while.

For myself, I'm just looking forward to the EE's getting an HD treatment, regardless of the special features (which are honestly not a huge selling point anyways). Of course, compared to everything Grand Bob listed, this is really trivial. I'm going to die at some point anyways - why bother getting the box? Hm. You've given me something to think about!

WB does not charge per disc. The DVDs barely affect the case sizes and price. I think it's great that WB has included every special feature from the last two releases.

If they put all of the DVD features on one BD, it'd be more expensive because it costs more for them to burn BDs instead of just having 3 DVDs. It's also seen as a waste because all of the features aren't in HD and people would complain about the "low quality" of the Blu-ray disc.

And while those who already own the Extended Editions ae upset that they must buy the same special features again, it'd be easier to sell your EE DVDs and buy the Blu-ray than have people buy LOTR Extended WITHOUT any special features and then buy two more DVD versions of LOTR EE.

The point of #3, of course, was emphasizing the extent to which people (in general, not only forum members) will stage personal attacks over the most trivial subject matter (e.g. "if you can't hear the obvious difference between lossless audio and 'x', you're an f-ing idiot", etc.). I believe that the inclusion of the same special features marketed with the EE's a decade ago - when there were statements in the press that alluded to Peter Jackson stating that new special features would be included with the Blu-ray EE release - falls into that category. But, whatever...

It's nothing against your comment, just the way you phrased it seemed inherently silly to me. Didn't mean to insult your thoughts, just more the way you phrased is as non-trivial because of looming death - just a bit melodramatic, eh? Anyways, no harm, no foul.

Overreaction on my part. I thought by the time I turned 50 I would have gotten past being upset at people who yell in caps. Now I'm just another grumpy old man. Anyway, hope you enjoy the EE's as much as I will, we've all waited a long time.
