I think if both formats end up failing (because of a stalemate) then people who like optical media will get DVD's upconverted and people who like digital will download. Optical media will still exist, we just might not get a "step forward" like we would with Blu-ray. Most people are more than happy to stay with upconverts, especially on new releases where the source material is pristine.
