In a world where technological alternatives become available for most anything much quicker than they used to, dilly-dallying with a format war while Apple, MS et.al. await with downloads etc. is akin to suicide.

I personally don't see the big looming threat of digital distribution. It's not like going from CDs to MP3s this time, as movie files are much larger and far more cumbersome. Plus, the DRM on them is far more restrictive, and the prices are much higher.

I would like to think that most people would still "trust" having a physical copy of their media over having an ephemeral file that could easily crap out on them.

I agree. I meant from the pov of HDM retailers.

If HDM remains fractured while iTunes, xbox live, Sony's PSN etc. all offer movies, the retailers may find themselves cut out from the home-movie value-chain in 2-3 years.

Time for them all to pick BD and be done with it. Which is why I think PM's comment about the TDB article (re HDM retailers) is significant and a good sign.
