To update the PS3 firmware to 1.50 use the System Software update.

From the home menu select the "Setting" and the first item it "System Update" You need to have the PS3 connected to the internet for this to work.

Below is a link from Sony that shows you how update the PS3

http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates

Yes check all the boxes that your TV support and the PS3 should do the rest for you.
