Have any of you guys ever gotten bored or lost interest in purchasing BD's for a period of time?
I know that when I first came onto this website and got my first BR movie for Christmas, The Dark Knight). I was hooked for awhile trying to build my collection and purchasing movies that I really enjoyed. I've begun to notice lately that my interest has started to dwindle, or most likely the titles being released just don't capture my attention. I am not gonna complain since it has saved me a lot of money. Money that I am looking forward to putting towards titles like: The Lord of the Rings (Extended Editions), The Lion King, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Criterion) etc., etc. You can't go wrong that. ![]() |

My average movie buying is 100-150 titles per year. I have a method to my madness and that's I usually buy 2 movies at a time unless it's a box set and or there is a sweet deal going on in-store or the net. I've learned to hold back on impulse buying on day 1 unless it's one I have to have on day 1, but it has to be at the right price. Amazon has made a mint off of me. My wife rags on me each time I want to add new movies to my shelf and I remind her that it could be worse and I can always drink the money away. Besides I compromise every now and then and pick some that she likes more then me. But for those of us who have large collections and those who are just starting, my name is Mike and I am a movie-aholic. welcome to bluray not so anonymous.

Here's a rundown In my daily attempt to reduce my Bluray purchases,
Sitting around browsing the web. "Hmm I think I'll go to Blu-ray.com" "Oh look a sale! I better buy NOW!" Later: I need to cut down on my Bluray purchases. Repeat: As much click through links we provide for Blu-ray.com and Amazon I'm thinking they need to send some special deals our way. Only available by buying through the website. |

I agree very much. These few movies will be the movies that are still remembered and played in 30 years. While we're look back at 2000's like we look at 70's or 80's movies. We will be amazed at what passed for 'blockbuster!' at the box office. Personally I'm sick of the over use of CGI which IMO looks worse then some of the tricks they used before CGI. I have a feeling in the future this generation of CGI will look like models on strings from the 80's , rear projection in the 50's or even dynamation in the 40's looks to us now. Although the Harryhausen stuff maintains a charm for me and many of the older effects took a lot of ingenuity to pull of. Something missing a lot in today's films where green screens are replacing everything.

Hollywood produces mainly films for shallow teenagers who don't own brains large enough to appreciate real cinema. All they have to offer is CGI and special effects with a mediocre script. Only a handful of films they generate are remembered 5 years after release. Funny thing is that most thought-provoking and small budget films come from Europe and Asia and are far superior year after another. I miss those days when a good script and cast was everything. Today's world is just about who looks good and what makes money. This was supposed to be a quiet month for me. Here's the list what I eventually ended up purchasing: Days of Glory, Katyn, The World, M, Tokyo Sonata, Dirty Harry Collection, Planet Earth, 30 Days of Night, Red Desert, Saturday Night&Sunday Morning, 3:10 to Yoma, Taxi Driver, Imsomnia, Stand by Me, El Mariachi/Desperado, La Haine, 36, Mesrine pt. 1+2, 21 Grams, Raging Bull, Hidden, Elite Squad, 2001:ASO, Apocalypse, Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, Night of the Living Dead. But yeah, it is rather disappointing that Hollywood and many directors place too much emphasize on CGI and larger-than-life battle scenes than focus on putting together a film with strong dialogue, acting and the such. But alas, such is the way of the microwave generation that we live in now, where instant gratification prevails. ![]() Something that I am guilty of enjoying myself, if you browse my collection. I just try to keep it to a minimum. ![]() Hmm. Just out of curiosity, do you guys think that there will come a time when directors and Hollywood will return back to the basics of story-telling? Or will this trend of visuals over substance continue to dominate for the time being? |

Not me. I realized a few years back that I was seldom watching very many of the DVDs I had and mainly just sticking with watching things from the first time from Netflix.
So I've cut my buying way back, got rid of a bunch of DVDs etc. I got a BR player in Nov 2008, and I've only got around 80 BRs so far, and probably half or more of those are favorites I upgraded from DVD. I just realized collecting in a grand sense wasn't for me. I generally prefer to watch something for the first time than rewatch something I've already seen. Add in that I live in a city in a fairly small condo, and that I tend to move fairly often, and having a huge collection doesn't make a ton of sense for me. So Have around 80 BRs and probably around 200 DVDs now and try to only buy movies I really, really enjoy. Anything else I can Netflix if I get an urge to rewatch. I do still buy the occasional movie I could do without because it was $10 or less, but I do that much less often than before. I bought way too many DVDs back in the late 90s to early 2000s when they were super cheap online and I was just getting into movies more seriously. And this post is in no way a knock on the people with huge collections. Just saying it's not for me personally. Renting makes more sense for me. |

The "Blu Rush" can be pretty scary. However, I think I've reasoned with myself to only get the ones that I am likely to watch over again and not just because I can buy them.

Its always been this way. Whats neat and cool this generation will get old and boring and then another movie maker with a fresh vision on a genre will come along make a buttload of money. Then every studio will make the same kind of movie over and over until whatever made the first movie so new and refreshing becomes old and stale. Then the process repeats itself. In between releases there are always quite a few good movies made that don't fit the mold.
