Ah I think that's why then. With other netflix devices it's device specific, with the PS3 you can use Netflix from any PS3. Your Netflix account is tied to your PSN account and not the PS3 itself (so I can use all my PS3s with a single subscription).

That's funny because Anonymous CAN'T claim innocence on this one. As a group that is not organized, they can't make claims about everyone that acts in their name. I would bet my entire life savings on the notion that they have a large percentage of "members" who aren't even known to those in charge of the "group."

If anything, I bet it's some knit-wit who's trying to prove himself worthy enough of the attention of those running the group. Perhaps an attempt for some loser to say, "See... I should be a member. Look what I did to your arch-nemesis! Let's get together for coffee sometime and talk about our future criminal activities together."

The PSN has been down like this before. Nobody was ever "reimbursed" for temporary lack of access to a FREE service.

PS+ Members already get free and discounted content... so you have nothing to complain about.

Those with Netflix might have something to argue about. However, there isn't much they will be able to get out of it since your Netflix account still works on every other electronic device you own.

I hate to burst everyones bubbles, but I'm just being realistic here.
It seems that we've fallen through time and landed in Kindergarten... There's a WHOLE LOT of crying going on.

If your life is so involved with video games maybe you need to get a better rounded life.

And, as Petra said, you're not getting anything free. Deal with it. If you actually bothered to read ANY of your EULAs you can't do anything to Sony or ANY of the game companies for taking the servers down.

Sony can take them down for the next month if they wanted to and there's nothing that you could do except cry.

Geesh. People act like they're still children so frequently...

Yeah, I was signed in last night playing GT5 and Portal 2 but once I signed out and tried to sign in again, it would fail immediately with the 80710A06 error. I wasn't able to login again after that.

That's the exact code I got all night yesterday. Also, for some odd reason, 3 times I got a message that said funds couldn't be added to my account, but I hadn't attempted to add funds last night.

Weird.

This is not entirely the case. You do need to sign in to a PSN profile to access Netflix on the PS3, but the accounts are not tied to either the specific PS3, nor a PSN account. It's tied to the e-mail/password for the Netflix account you wish to use.

Because of this, it's ridiculous that the PS3 needs to first sign into the PSN to use the service. As someone else mentioned earlier, since the browser works without being signed in (ie; you still have an internet connection), requiring a PSN sign in only causes extra problems.

For me anyway, this has been happening for at least a week so it's a little discouraging that after a week, they still don't seem to have a clue as to what is wrong. Of course, as the other posts mentioned, it has gone gotten much worse now so maybe they'll finally be able to figure out what's wrong.

The Netflix account is whats tied to your PSN account. Simply having an internet connection isn't enough to get you on Netflix, they need some method of verifying that you're authorized to use it. For the PS3 they chose to use your PSN account because the functionality is built-in, for other devices that don't have that kind of functionality they use some sort of code to register the device (apparently).

EDIT: I should note this is just my theory as to why people need to sign in with their PSN account first.

I was a day and a half away from the end of my 1-week Hulu Plus trial when it stopped letting me sign on. I wanted to let the trial turn into a subscription at the end, but looks like I'll have to cancel now and subscribe later. I wanted to try Hulu Plus specifically for use with PS3, but I wouldn't want to pay for who knows how many days that I won't be able to use as intended. Watching movies and TV shows on a 15" laptop with a low max volume is a lot less appealing than a 42" 1080p TV.

If this is a malicious hack, it's hurting more companies than just Sony. Netflix and Hulu Plus are missing out on potential subscriptions and their current subscribers are getting service interruptions for one of their big devices. VUDU must be losing TONS of single-movie sales, since they don't have the security of monthy sunscriptions. Sucks to be any independent game dev who was planning to release their games on PSN this week too.

Woooo PSN down for over a day....love it (80710A06 error). They better throw something free to us as an apology.

Damn you, Sony. Stop messing with hackers. They go from harmless to ruining my day.

I got the same message when I tried to sign in yesterday night and this morning. "Guys, I don't want to buy anything, I just want to log in."

Garbage. Permanently down for up to 2 days for everyone?

Sony royally screwed this up. Not only has it taken them almost 5 days to acknowledge something since people first started reporting problems, now they just shut it down for everyone for up to 2 days. Well done. Well done indeed.

It has nothing to do with sympathizing with or being a "corporate apologist." It has everything to do with not being a cry baby, nor believing that everyone owes me something.

So the PSN is down. Do you know why it's down? No. You're (people here in general) are just crying.

If Sony said it was down because they felt like it then fine, be pissed. But for all you know this is an attack on the PSN where a hacker group is trying to steal credit card info and they're trying to clean up.

Point is. It's FREE. You don't HAVE to play on-line. Just because you PREFER it doesn't mean you HAVE to.

My self interest is to have a life and not cry because a free on-line service is down. And yes I'm a PSN+ member. But what does that matter? The store was already updated and I got what I wanted from PSN+ this week.

Any downtime to the store after that is just hurting them, not me.

What's a more perplexing mystery of modern life is how EVERYONE thinks the world owes them something...

It's not. I know of several people who are using the Netflix account of others and the only tie is the log-in for the Netflix account. That's the authorization.

Edited to add; My guess is that the PSN log-in requirement is most likely for data gathering purposes (to know how many subscribers are logging in from which devices).

So...the definition of "crying" = 'whenever one's priorities skew slightly differently than mine do.' Gotcha.
