I heard the Japan theory too, but I think it's just a rumor at this point. I would hope a company with servers so widespread across the globe would try to avoid single "points" of failure even if that point is all of Japan.
I highly doubt it's hackers, though. For one thing, it's working (anonymous only kinda sorta took down the psn last time) and secondly, those douches would be crowing to the world right now.

In case anyone's having the same weird problem, my controllers all stopped working simultaneously. Turns out the Automatic Sign-In (with the PSN down) was causing it. Once I deactivated it, all of my controllers started working again. Not sure if it's just a problem with PS3 fats or what, but I hope this will help some people who might freak out like I did.

He signed into his PSN name he made on my ps3 and linked his steam account on my portal 2 disc. Went home and put in the code and downloaded it.

I think you still need a psn account linked with your steam account for it to work though, because he tried without linking his psn name and an error came up.

This is a minor annoyance for ME ... I have not used my PS3 for gaming in for maybe a week, but I like to use Netflix and I was PLANNING on playing some WARHAWK with an old friend

The real annoyance is that someone would claim that should only be a certain level of annoyance to someone else. Honestly, if your recreation is to game, it IS a big deal. If this had happened when I was playing every day, I would have been irritated as hell.

If you were a runner, and suddenly you had an injury or otherwise could not run, that can be devastating. (happened to me when I broke my back)

If you enjoy reading every day, and suddenly all the books you were interested in burned, and there was no way to replace them, that is tough nuggets. (Happened to my sister when her books got flooded moving across the country)

etc.

There is NOTHING wrong with REALLY enjoying one thing, and it is natural to be distressed when it suddenly is unavailable. It is NORMAL (and healthy) to look for support among similar minded individuals going through the same problem.

The only strang thing is how much "You like games too much" going on in a forum for gaming... That is like coming here to tell people that they talk too much about Blu-ray, or going to a Apple forum to tell everyone they are talking about Apple too much. Holy smokes.

Personally, I volunteer, bike, run with my dog, watch TV, take walks with my girlfriend, work 10 hour days, etc and LOVE to game. I am not going to come to the PS3 forum for anything but gaming. That does not make my life gaming; it makes the forum specific.

The first time I used it with my PS3 I wondered why I had to log in to PSN and saw this day coming. I just hope it's back up by tomorrow afternoon at the LATEST. Wouldn't want the weekend kicked off bad like that.
Strange. I was able to go into the Netflix UI and play a couple of movies just minutes ago. Granted, the first thing that happened when I started up the app was that it wanted me to sign into the PSN, so I hit X to sign in, get the error message, app starts loading up the Netflix screen in the background, get the sign in again, try it, same error message. But I was able to get in and stream movies. Only thing that didn't happen with the PSN outage is that my movies watched on the PS3 didn't update on the Netflix website. But Netflix does work despite the PSN outage.

Worked on both my 60GB Phat hardwired and my stepson's 160GB Slim wireless.

Hey, Phantom, thanks for the lecture, but it doesn't apply. I never told anyone to get a life, and didn't say anything about a member of this forum. I was talking about the general outrage I spied over the internet. I think we can all agree that some of the outrage going around is, well, kind of melodramatic. It is not okay to view a 24-hour annoyance as a matter of life and death. I said I understood why people are annoyed, but some of them take it to a ludicrous level. You'd think their entire families had been killed in front of them.
I wasn't insulting anyone on this board, sorry if I raised your hackels. I'm writing this on my ps3, so my messages might not convey all the info I want them to, as I'm using a gamepad. So chill brother, I wasn't slinging mud.

So the PSN is down. Do you know why it's down? No. You're (people here in general) are just crying.

If Sony said it was down because they felt like it then fine, be pissed. But for all you know this is an attack on the PSN where a hacker group is trying to steal credit card info and they're trying to clean up.

Point is. It's FREE. You don't HAVE to play on-line. Just because you PREFER it doesn't mean you HAVE to.

My self interest is to have a life and not cry because a free on-line service is down. And yes I'm a PSN+ member. But what does that matter? The store was already updated and I got what I wanted from PSN+ this week.

Any downtime to the store after that is just hurting them, not me.

What's a more perplexing mystery of modern life is how EVERYONE thinks the world owes them something...
I love you man! Not in the gay way... but I do love you.

I would have imagined that Sony has plenty of contingency servers all over the planet to redirect traffic if something major happens. However, I guess there is a possibility that all of the geographical troubles in Japan could be somewhat responsible for the issues. I never thought about that possibility.

Also, this is a section of a forum where a LOT of people game and hunt trophies frequently. This sort of reaction should not be surprising.

You also have to realize that these reactions are compounded by the surrounding circumstances:

1) Three big games released this week.
2) Easter weekend.
3) Some children have an extra day off tomorrow for Easter/Good Friday. And this one school day they have off until June and extra day for the weekend, they can't play their new games online.

In a situation like this, complaining and whining is a natural and understandable consumer response. But it just seems you can't deal with the negative reactions.

Just because the PS service is free doesn't mean that consumers can't complain or voice their annoyance with not being able to play $60 games online. Consumers expect it to be fully functional upon buying a PS3 and when it isn't, they naturally can be upset.

Now, I won't comment on people demanding games or rewards for putting up with it. I won't demand it, but I sure won't turn it down.
You're telling this to the person ranked the highest on the trophy leaderboard for this site?

I play a shit ton at home and I work at Sony and play there all day. Gaming is a HUGE part of my life. But there's no need in crying, complaining, or whatever about an issue that you don't fully understand.

Paying $60 has nothing to do with anything... The PS2 games costs roughly $60 and didn't include online play. Just because you're accustomed to a feature doesn't mean it's owed to you.

I was just able to log in to the PSN. However, the only way I did it was through netflix.

Any of you guys able to do that? I was wondering if its just a log in by chance or did I discover something? Also, although I am logged in I can't play any Netflix movies, I just tried to start a movie (Just Cause movie and its been trying to load up for the past 5 mins) and its still showing that I am online.

I feel like complaining about the people complaining doesn't really do anything but cause more trouble and is as equally as annoying. People are going to complain about something no matter what and complaining about it, is not going to change anything

Well, NetFlix works. It will keep trying to log into the PSN while it connects but that goes away once you do. I wonder if this is related to the problems Amazon is having. Apparently Amazon runs a huge server service, the largest cloud server provider and they are having issues.
