Difference between dolby digital 2/0 and 3/2.1 ch?

I played a SD-DVD which is suppose to show up as 5.1 CH but it reads as dolby 3/2.1 CH. I thought the 710 could do 5.1 on SD-DVDS?

3/2.1 is 5.1
3 channels in the front 2 channels in the back, and the .1 channel is the LFE channel.
If it was 7.1 it would show up as 3/4.1 which would be 8 channels instead of the 6 channels with 5.1

So then the Sony 710 that usually only does 2.0 CH PCM is really 5.1 CH if i get 3/2.1 CH DTS or dolby digital?

not according to alot of people, it has been said it does not do HDMI using hd.blurays as it appears 2.0 CH.

I would hate to hook up the 810 and have it say dolby 3/2.1 CH because if thats what 5.1 CH is then the 710 already has it..?

It is compressed DD or DTS or 2.0 PCM. No Multichannel PCM or TrueHD.

How much better is uncompressed sound...then the 810 sony will do uncompressed?

I here it is great. I don't know personally, I still use compressed audio.

This Sony will do PCM, but no Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA HD

actually yes, the Sony STR-DG810 is 5.1PCM capable...the PS3 decodes Dolby TrueHD into a PCM signal.

So yes you can hear both Uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD.

Dts-HD is not supported by the PS3 at the moment.

Sony is not good at listing the proper specs...for receivers...I dont know about the other products.

Do you have HD sound, maybe you can give the OP some input on vs. uncompressed?

Uncompressed lossless audio sounds so much cleaner. To me it gives a more precise feel to the action on screen, and the ambient environment arround you. You notice the little things a little better, like the ping of a bullet hitting something, or chatter in the background of restaraunts... Kinda hard to describe with words.

3/2.1 is 5.1ch Compressed.

The 710 will still do 5.1PCM (uncompressed)

IMHO, I would rather use something other than Sony for a receiver. Sony makes excellent tv's and Blu-ray players, but I've never liked their car stereo lineup nor their home theater receivers or speakers. Pioneer, Onkyo, and Denon are my personal choice when it comes to sound.
