I watched this today and will watch 2 and 3 in the coming weeks to prepare for On Stranger Tides later in May.

This is one of those movies I can throw in almost anytime (assuming I have 2h 23m to play with) to have a good, fun time.

It's got a great good guy, a great bad guy, incredibly funny humor and an interesting story to tell.

Johnny Depp is fantastic as Captain Jack. His mannerisms, his delivery of his lines. It's all pitch perfect to create one of the most fun (and funny) characters in any movie I've ever seen.

For all the love Depp gets, I don't think Rush gets enough for his turn at Barbossa in the original film. He does every bit as good a job as Depp does and makes for a perfectly matched adversary for Jack. I love Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, but Barbossa vs Jack is much better.

I've flip flopped many times on which is my favorite. For a while it was At World's End. Then it went to Dead Man's Chest. Now it may be the Curse of the Black Pearl again. It doesn't really matter that much though, as they all give the same score from me...

Rating - 4.5/5

I'll watch 1 and 3 to prepare for OST. Number 2 doesnt exist to me.

I think we've gone over this before, but why did #2 turn out so bad for you?

It felt like it tried too hard to be BIG and SPECIAL and STUFFED with action. It was too all-over-the-place for me.

Really eager to see McShane be a baddy.

Understandable.

My biggest issue with the two sequels is the more heavy handed focus on Will and Elizabeth. I'm not watching these movies for them

Hmmmmmm. I just noticed something in that poster. He has glowing light bulbs attached to the ends of his braided beard. Wassup wit dat?

And why isnt his beard BLACK?

Seeing as he's got a daughter Penelope Cruz's age...I'm guessing he's up around his 50s by now...making him Grey Beard.

He's actually 68. The wig he's wearing looks kinda dishwater blonde (ish).

Thats it! The movie is ruined and I wont see it. EVER!

Next greatest blind-buy: “The Town.”

A pair of scary masked dudes on the cover with guns, with a plot revolving around bank heists, and a bunch of good reviews spurred me to check this out. The fact that it’s another fine film directed by Ben Affleck got me even more intrigued (I thought “Gone Baby Gone” was alright).

Running along similar lines to “Heat,” “The Town” follows bank robbers and cops chasing each other all over…the town.

The opening scenes are pretty darn intense, and the various fights and conflicts that follow are equally violent. The entire last half-hour or so includes some really sweet shootouts and pursuits. And in between, there are healthy doses of emotional drama, character-driven conflicts, and suspense. It’s very interesting seeing how all the characters come together and ultimately break apart; it makes for quite an entertaining experience. My only complaint is that the film is fairly long (at least with the extended cut) with maybe some drag in the middle.

The story’s brilliant though, making ample use of dramatic irony to keep the audience glued to the action to see who’s going to find out what and how the characters react. Some of this may be predictable, but I felt the movie reached a satisfying resolution. Characters are quite strong throughout. And the settings are quite distinctive; with the locations, sets, and character accents, I felt effectively immersed in Charlestown.

As a film, “The Town” has wonderful photography; thankfully not as jumpy as “Gone Baby Gone.” A few well-chosen flashback shots show decent editing, and help make the film even more stylish. Acting is pretty good and the writing’s great. Production value seems high, and the music is cool.

Even though I need to re-watch “Heat,” I currently like this here film a grade better.

4.5/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

Recommendation: Yep.

This Blu-Ray looks and sounds great; I have no big complaints.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5
