CES starts this weekend. We won't hear much at all from any of our Insiders for the next week.

it was only a matter of time on the standalone front. I guess the fact there is more choice dosent hurt either. with 1.1 box being ticked. fence sitters are jumping in.

Also at CES, word is that Microsoft's Bill Gates may use his keynote address on Sunday to announce some kind of new open architecture plan for the Xbox 360, that would allow other manufacturers to produce 360s like PCs. First up may be a new joint venture with Toshiba to produce an "ultimate" version of the Xbox 360 featuring a DVR and built-in HD-DVD drive, designed to go after Sony's PS3.

This caught my eye in the same Digital Bits report:

There have been rumors about an Xbox with a built-in HD DVD drive for a while. But if it's going to be part of a joint venture with Toshiba that is itself part of a scheme to let other manufactures build combo devices with Xbox technology, that sounds like Microsoft is less than committed to this project. In other words, it has more of a "fine, we'll let Toshiba do this" feel to it.

This is actually the second time I hear that the Blu standalones have outpaced the HD DVDs, but first time from a reliable source

It will not happen, this rumor pops up before every big event such as last years CES and E3.
Microsoft has other interests such as their iptv and expanding their vod as well as possible dvr functionality in the 360.

Perhaps Microsoft will stuff the Vista operating system into the XBox. Now that would be a real winning combination.

Insiders,

I have noticed that more recent titles from Lionsgate doesn't have region markings on their covers. I find this annoying since I live in Sweden with a region B player and would like to buy some of their titles. Before doing so it would be nice to know if they are going to work.

Any chance they will start labelling their covers again?

I agree that Microsoft doesn't seem that interested in it. That's what struck me about this item. Reading between the lines, it's almost as if Microsoft told Toshiba they don't want to do it but to pacify them agreed to let Toshiba do it themselves.

I do not think it will ever see the light of day, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was announced and then quietly dropped when HD DVD enters serious decline.

Time for Penton-Man's 1000th post.

I think this is a good time to talk about how the Domino Effect will work in this case and what the next steps should be. Any insider's want to comment on that? Seems like the odds of Blockbuster starting to carry both just went very low and while January was already looking like it would be big for Blu-ray in the Nielsens from a very poor release slate from HD DVD, now it will probably get worse, with many people who got HD DVD players around Christmas still having a chance to return them and others being wary of buying HD DVDs. If Warner releases their announced stuff on both, the ratios for common titles should be bigger in Blu-ray's direction now.
