That's the cover for the Canadian release. Probably just a mistake by Amazon.

Amazon will often post anything up to attract pre-orders, even images and information not supplied by the studio or distributor. So that is definitely not the cover art for the new American release.

There will be another Alliance release of Equilibrium in Canada, but as a double feature with Renaissance. The single disc BD-50 comes out on June 21st, & will have no subs or extras.

These releases are identical except that the HD DVD contains a lossy DD+ track while the Japanese BD has a lossless track.
Well, the film was shot in Super-35, so without direct comparison one cannot tell whether the matte was further opened up for the 1.78:1 framing, or a 2.35:1 framed transfer was cropped. Need to do a side-by-side comparison. A great example of what can happen when films shot in Super-35 and originally framed for 2.35:1 are transferred for different display aspect ratios is the DVD of Supernova (the one directed by Walter Hill).

Both a letterboxed (enhanced for widescreen TVs) and a full-frame version are included, and the full-frame version actually features more vertical image information, while losing almost no horizontal information, if I recall correctly.

In any case, while the OAR of Equilibrium is indeed 2.35:1, the 1.78:1 transfer isn't necessarily cropped, because the film was not shot with anamorphic lenses, and thus additional vertical image information is available.

FWIW...

I almost forgot this was coming out in May. Glad I caught the thread. Hopefully the transfer is better than the DVD. This movie is great.

There are comparisons online of the 1.78:1 and 2.35:1 releases.

For the 1.78:1 release the live-action scenes are opened up so there's a lot of dead space on the top and bottom of the frame. During any CG sequences like the city shots the picture is cropped on the sides. This is common even for Super35 films because only the 2.35:1 protected region of a particular shot is used for CG sequences. To animate the entire open-matte frame when you are ultimately going to cover ~30% of the frame with matte bars is just a waste of time.

The entire film is obviously meant for the 2.35:1 framing because of the dead space for the live action scenes and the fact that the image is cropped at the sides during the CG sequences. I think this movie has incredible cinematography and the carefully composed shots are ruined in the open-matte form.

Dutch release is the cheap alternative (compared to Japanese version) to get OAR. Check out the Blubrew review.

But what about the Polish release, any info of it?

Which Dutch company released it? Many, if not most, Dutch Blu-rays are region-free even if the packaging indicates Region B. They just do not get tested as much because few are willing to take a chance and import a copy to see if it plays in Region A.

Thanks - is the text on the back cover all in Dutch, or English? Do you know who sells it online?

Best Buy has two different listings for Equilibirum?

One of them apparently was released back in '09 and is available now for $15

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Equilibr...06942&id=62904

And the other released in mid May for $13. Anyone know what the differences would be?

Ok this is getting a little frustrating, this will be released in 11 days and yet not hard details have emerged regarding OAR or extras! It seemed like people knew everything about From Dusk Till Dawn like a month before release! Then again I don't have much hope at this point after the last few Echo titles released

That's because FDTD was available at BestBuy a month before the general release. Even if Equilibrium was available early I'm sure a lot less people are willing to pick it up now that they've heard about the quality of prior EB releases.

We probably won't find out anything about these May 10th EB releases until the 10th, unless someone finds them early. Expect no extras.

That's because it was being sold at BB one month early.
