Default Sea Monsters

IMAX Sea Monsters has a Tylosaurus (The T-Rex of the ocean!) jump out of the water and snap its jaws right in front of your nose.

Few pop-outs compare...

I thought Despicable Me had a few good pop-outs, especially during the end credits.

IMAX knows 3D. We own 8 or 9 IMAX BD's, including space station and Under the Sea. You're right about the lift-off, especially with surround sound cranked-up, it's just downright fun.

Thanks for the info, all.

It looks like some IMAX 3D BDs are in my future...

Honestly, I figured I would see Alice in Wonderland on this list, but it looks like IMAX takes home the trophy for the best 3D pop out scenes.

Edit: Regarding Yogi Bear: I just watched this with my GF about a week ago. We both wanted to see it but went into it with VERY low expectations becuase of all the negative word around this movie. To be honest, though, we both enjoyed it quite a bit. Sure, the movie was dumb fun, but it was FUN none-the-less. Silly premise aside, it did make us laugh quite a bit and I thought it captured the feel of the cartoon quite well. Everything that happened, I could easily imagine happening in the old cartoons. Especially the interactions between Yogi/Boo Boo and Ranger Smith. I may take some heat for this, but I would give Yogi a 3/4 stars...

That's not to say that I don't enjoy movies that require brain cells and have no explosions or CGI. I just take Yogi Bear for what it is, a fun (and harmless) adventure for the family.

Very hard to come by but Sammy's Adventure was great. Lots of pop outs and great depth. Some of the best 3D I've seen so far.

I can't speak for any IMAX films, waiting for price to dip but hear they're spectacular, but I have to say cloudy with a chance
Of meatballs was one of my favorites so far...minimal ghosting, great depth, and some very good pop out scenes. I'd have to say open house was equally good 3D but I enjoyed the cloudy meatballs story more overall.

It's sad movie directors has not yet learned to direct 3D pop-out films. The one i have right now with most pop-outs I'd say is AIW.

Anyway, I picked up a 3D t.v. along with Tangled 3D BD to get me started. One thing I have to admit is that I am a sucker for all of the "pop out" scenes. Especially when there are objects floating in front of the screen.

For example, in Tangled, my favorite 3D scenes are when they launch all of the lanterns and there are two lanterns that float out into the room for a bit. Also, the menu screen as the lanterns float out from the t.v. is really cool IMO.

I know...I know...but I just can't help myself. I absolutely LOVE the "gimmicky" shots.

Certainly, among 3D users I cannot be the only one...

Anyway, I am looking to get some more 3D content but I want to get titles with the best/most instances of things coming out at you, or floating around in front of the screen. Especially if there are any good live action ones.

Can anyone provide me with their favorites?

Thanks.

You actually prefer the gimmicky pop out 3d shit as opposed added depth to the image? You know, the thing about 3d that isn't a gimmick, that actually immerses the viewer

Because pop-out is not what 3d should be about. That's just gimicky. Depth to the image is what 3d should and is about. It's much less obtrusive and actually immersive.

that's much more important than pop-out effects.

I think both pop-out and depth are equally important. There should always be some pop-out during a movie, not just great depth.

These are just your opinions. I hate that pop-out 3D gets labeled as "gimmicky". I love it when it happens and feel much more "immersed" than added "depth". Added depth makes me feel like I looking through a window to see the action (that's how I felt with Avatar). Pop-out 3D makes me feel like the action is in my room with me.

To each their own, but to label it as a gimmick is just incorrect when it's used properly.

I still remember The Muppets in 3D at Disney and one of the characters (gonzo maybe?) points directly in your face. EVERYBODY in the theater thinks that the character is pointing at them. It's an amazing experience and I don't think anybody in the theater was thinking about anything other than the muppet pointing at them. You are drawn in more when those things happen. Not taken out of the scene.

Now, having said that, it has to be used sparingly. It's not cool to always have in-your-face shots. Your brain would tire of it. If you watch the behind the scenes of Tangled 3D BD (or maybe it was the Shrek 4 Dreamworks crew that said it), the directors talk about dialing up and down the depth of field in 3D so that your brain doesn't get used to seeing the in-your-face shots. They do this so that, when those shots do occur, your brain interprets those shots as something special. The directors can use 3D as another tool to draw your emotions into their film.

It sounds to me as though NathanDrakeFan is just regurgitating something James Cameron had said a while back about studios using "pop outs" as a type of gimmick. He probably has a hard time thinking for himself.

On topic, when my wife an dI saw A Christmas Carol in theaters we noticed the snowflakes almost seemed to actually hit you in the face. Is that the way they appear on BD?

I am actually vascilating between purchasing a 3D TV or not. I have seeen some of the demos but am still unsure as to whether I want to fork over the extra cash.

I remember commenting how it appeared to be snowing in my HT room with this disc, so I would say that it is the same on blu as it was in the theater for you I also got a comment from a buddy of mine who I showed this to that the "snow was falling in his lap".

I have A Christmas Carol 3D, and I do have a 3D TV. When the snow is falling in the movie and you moving past the buildings (on top and through), the snowflakes caused a lot of reaction out of me at least, they seemed to be directly coming at me.

The other scene I liked was in Step Up 3D, where the two main characters get a slurpee and kind of let it fly while an air vent is blowing upwards. The slurpee drops seem to whizz and go straight for your eyes!

That's how The Polar Express 3D was for me at the theater. So, I now own PE and ACC in 3D on BD and I have less than a month until my new 3DTV arrives. So I haven't seen them in 3D at home yet.

I've got the Panasonic VT30 65" on pre-order with calibration. If I can do it, so can you.

That was the same comment I made after PE.
