Default 6.1 set up. 2 questions

Part 1,

I don't have the room to set up a 7.1 system , I think I have the room for a 6.1 setup, my question is how do I do this with the receiver I have? (Yamaha HTR-5063) Rear of receiver in attached pic.htr5063bl_rear.jpg

Part 2,

What is the preferred location of the rear center as far as height in relation to my existing rear speakers?

Also what is the benefit of 6.1 over 5.1?

Thanks in advance.

Just hook up the rear speaker to one of the red & black terminals for the Surround backs on the back of your receiver. Left speaker for single it says.

Your surround & surround rear speakers should be about 2 feet above your ears

If you don't have the room for a 7.1, don't force it to become a 6.1.

The ole saying or close to it, 'A proper place 5.1 will out perform a bad placed 7.1 system'

But if you do have room for that 6th channel, on the back of your receiver, it is labeled for 'Single'

Ah, as crazyBLUE pointed out, it's labeled

Thanks guys I didn't notice that single label,

Now what can I expect out of this 6th channel if I choose to use it?

In my opinion Having the sound coming from the sides & the back makes for a much better surround field. I like it much better having my surround rear speakers.

Whatever the director and or sound engineer decide to put on that channel for that particular movie will be pretty much what you get out of it.

Or

If your listening to music from all your speakers, you will get sound out of it.

Existing rear speakers? Have you placed your surrounds in the back instead of on the sides? In a 5.1 system the surrounds go on the sides and slightly behind the main seating position.

In a 6.1 system, the rear speaker goes in the middle. For 7.1, the rears go behind and at least 60 degrees apart. The surrounds move forward a bit so that they are directly on the sides.

Rear speakers anchor the audio that would phantom image behind the listeners in a 5.1 system.

By rear I was refering to my surrounds they are on the sides.

My theater room has a 6.1 channel setup using a Yamaha receiver. The surround channels are on the side, so they will be in use for any 5.1 channel track, leaving the rear surround speaker unused in standard 5.1 modes. If you select the extended surround (ES/EX) mode on your Yamaha, the receiver will matrix out the rear surround channel from a 5.1 soundtrack, giving you a 6.1 presentation. For any 7.1 channel blu-ray sound track, the left and right rear surround tracks will be combined for playback through the rear surround speaker.

I had my room pre-wired by the HT designer for 6.1 when it was built. My room is a combined HT/gameroom, with the HT area encompassing 17 1/2' L x 15' W. Without a sidewall on the right I didn't have a good area for side surround speakers, so I went with a 6.1 setup. For movies, the addition of the rear surround speaker greatly enhances the surround field and viewing experience.
