I don't think it's New Line that is screwing people, but Warner Bros., correct me if I am wrong. I think Warner now owns the rights to the films and thus its home video department is responsible for the Blu Rays.

what ..... the..... f@ck??????!!?? where is Newline/Warner being "greedy" by releasing the films on 2 discs?????? they are still sold the same way.... As one movie. they aren't inflating the msrp anymore past what it would've been on one disc. this *****ing about the movie being on one disc is just childish and stupid at best

There's no "greed" because the price of the set isn't dependent on whether the film is spread out on two discs or contained on one disc. The issue is one of ease-of-compression, and that's a call by WB in this case. But either way, it's not "greed".

On a BD-50, 9hrs of video with nothing else would give you about 12Mbps video bitrate.

Add on a single DTS-MA track and you are looking at under 9Mbps for video.

Now add on some other audio tracks, menus, and also account for the fact that BDs are rarely 100% full, and you could be talking about 7Mbps or less for the video.

If you think 7Mbps is enough for good quality video at 1080p then you don't know anything about video encoding. And with all due respect, in that case you should not be commenting on the matter.

I think the price is reasonable for 3 very long movies. And as I said before, I don't care if the movies are on 1 disc or 2, as long as the PQ and AQ are stellar. Mayve if more movies were split up, some BD player company would get their thumbs out of their backsides and come up with a multi-disc BD player.

+1

I was really hoping this "Its split across 2 discs!!! " thing had passed... sadly I guess not... so much for being happy about seeing a new master of fellowship, and the trilogy in their EXTENDED versions in Hi Def... I think I'm going to start complaining that there's black bars at the top and bottom just to give myself something to complain about

So you won't be able to access the internet, nor take a book with you?

There's definitely no way ROTK could fit onto one disc, but I reckon the others probably could, if WB could be bothered. Regardless, it's not worth boycotting the release for. I think putting the extras on 9 DVDs as opposed to 3 BDs, and not seemlessly branching with the theatricals annoy me more than the disc-splitting thing, tbh.

Fans typically prefer the extended versions - more story, more depth of characters. Only issue is they're long and may disrupt the pacing of the theatrical versions. This isn't out yet, so no one knows about the PQ, but the press release made it sound like they were making an effort to do better than the theatrical set.

Logical thinking is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, the people whom you are trying to convince with these FACTS will not heed your "pandering" (as they will call it) as anything more than lies. They are all !

Well, with the extended editions, you get almost 2 hours more footage. That's a full length movie worth of extra story, character, and depth.

Personally, I can't watch the theatricals anymore now that I've seen the extendeds.

As for the extras? If you don't care about them, it's a good thing that they won't be affecting the case size much. Then, you can "get rid of them" and still have very similar sized cases to every other case on your shelf.

Basically, it will come down to a price vs feature presentation content debate for yourself. Extended versions are definitely worth any extra price tag in my eyes.

We won't know about PQ comparibility until the EE's are released. Some people object to the length of the EE's, but if you like the story, the EE's are the way to go (especially for plot and character development) and I consider them a gift. I know of no other movie that has received the special treatment that Jackson has lavished on the LotR EE's. If length is an issue, just split the viewing up over multiple days. Also, the special features for the EE's, although already available with the DVD versions, are far superior to the special features provided with the TE's - and for just about any other movie. You may consider giving them a look.

I won't have that much room to carry the bible size Lord Of The Ring book I have I wish I was able to find them in e-book format since I will have my e-book for the 22 hour plane ride. I will be mostly with my wife and her family over there, not going to have much chance to pop in here and post unfortunatly
