Furthermore, you'd have to be a deceptive bastard and/or a delusional DUD boy to recommend to a newbie to buy HD DVD from this point forward. I do believe there is a "morality" regarding this issue especially now. |

Hopefully they'll split it into two threads, and people such as you that are not interested in watching the final weeks of BD vs. HD DVD can simply not read that thread. |

Well I doubt the magazine will cover both stories at the same time, my original post was simply wondering when the magazine itself would switch to covering the battle with DVD.
I see that's where we all got confused, sorry about that. I am going to enjoy HD DVD's January trouncing in the meantime hehe. |

I'd be shocked if HD-DVD even won a week in which they were doing wholesale firesales at this point.
Quite a few of my friends who were waiting for the war to be over purchased Blu-Ray players TODAY, because now they felt safe in their purchase. ![]() |

I went to BB today and chatted up one of the Magnolia guys. He said he got three text messages the day before about Warner going Blu. He said he won't try stearing anyone to HD-DVD. He also noted he was a Blu only owner...
Of course this BB has all Blu endcaps no HD-DVD... |

People in the past have said they might consider buying an HD DVD player when the war was over, so they could catch some of the HD DVD exclusives that they were interested in, especially if prices had plummeted.
Personally, I could see picking up a player for $15-$20, but I couldn't see getting the movies. But it might be fun to grab a player for that price and Netflix all the good HD DVD movies, especially the ones that don't have BD release dates in the near future. Getting back to the main topic, I doubt they'll win a week, but it's certainly possible, especially if retailers slash prices before the general public realizes what's going on. They might just be taken in by what seems to be a ridiculous bounty of very inexpensive HD DVD movies for a week or two before they catch on. |

Alrighty then. JasonR has spoken!

Second, I said this could happen if HD DVD prices were slashed to fire-sale levels and many members of the general public, who don't follow news the way we do, weren't aware of what was happening and just thought these were incredible bargains and a good opportunity to stock up their library. I said this in the context of explaining why I'm still interested in watching the BD vs. HD DVD numbers until DVD HD has shrunk to tiny levels, unlike others that assert they have no interest anymore and want to see the BD vs. DVD numbers from now on. No, believe it or not, I'm not actually so dim-witted that I think that people who know the format is doomed are going to buy a bunch of new titles. |

Hey, Bob, I actually enjoy your posts very much. Sorry if I sounded harsh.
![]() But there's just no way even firesales can help matters at this point. Back in November, when HD DVD still had a fighting chance, sure, people took advantage of the firesales. But now, if they start giving away players and software at even more drastic firesales -- even people who have no idea of the format war will be able to smell a turd. And the existing owners will stay away (if they're not rdjamites, of course). I'm willing to bet those who do buy this kind of product won't even register as a blip in the sales data, let alone win a week. Honestly, it IS over. |

Whatever happens will be fun to watch. People have posted in the "Blu-ray in retail stores" thread that they're still seeing people grabbing HD DVD players and discs, and when they give them a head's up on what's going on, it's clear the people had no idea. There's definitely going to be some lag before reality hits the general public.
Of course at this point the fire sales haven't started yet, and if they don't for a few weeks, then there will be no chance of a fluke one-week HD DVD win, as the news will be out by then. I'd be surprised if within a month we didn't see major movement by most retailers. I'm talking about things like stopping all HD DVD orders, tossing the remaining players and discs into a bargain bin, and expanding the Blu-ray inventory to fill all the former HD DVD space. Many may just pack up all their HD DVD stuff and send it to wherever you send products with no hope of selling (back to the companies that made them? Big Lots?). |

Looking at the schedule releases for HD DVD, there should be blow outs thru May and when Warner and NL end their contracts it should be all but over.
