Blue Valentine - 2010

Wow. There are some movies that just blow me away. This would be one of them.

I can't say enough of how good this story was. But more importantly, it was the whole package that just took me away. Script? Fantastic. Acting? Fantastic. Directing? Fantastic. Cinematography? Fantastic. And oh yeah, the story was fantastic.

Sure, this was a gut-wrenching film that will tear your heart apart. There ain't no
[Show spoiler]happy ending here folks. While this may not be "THE realistic" journey on how all married life can be, it sure is more spot on than sugar-coated films of the same genre.
Even though I knew I was going to watch a
[Show spoiler]downward spiral
of a film, it was so damn good to watch it all unfold. I believe people take enjoyment in not only happy films but tragic, sad films as well.

It was so beautiful to watch their relationship begin and blossom into something wonderful... but at the same time, seeing it all
[Show spoiler]fall apart
was gratifying too. I hated seeing it all
[Show spoiler]go down the drain
, but it was done so well, so brilliantly.

I just can't say enough about this film. I haven't felt this way about a movie since (500) Days of Summer.

See this film, as it is undoubtedly one of the top 5 documentaries I've ever seen (along with Grizzly Man, Night and Fog, The Cove, and one more). Read ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it--not even the brief netflix overview--it's the only way to see the film. I knew nothing at all about the film before watching it, and that was part of what made it so effective. A lot of ppl have clamored about it being a faux documentary (especially at Sundance), but I 100% believe it's true. Maybe some scenes were shot after the fact as recreations, but the content and story were not fabricated. The film is too genuine, too moving, and too strange to be fake in any way. See this film.
Hmmmmmmmm

Watch your damn cartoons already.

so stupid it's pretty good.

so this is what Walker and Caan did after they graduated high school (reference to them co-starring in Varsity Blues together )

Jessica Alba is as always

not as entertaining as i remember it being when i last watched this about three years ago

still glad i bought it

only "used" blu-ray i have ever purchased. from our buddy Diesel.

that has nothing to do with the film does it?

i don't care

Somewhere

2010 R 98 minutes

Netflix synopsis:

Set amid the hallowed grounds of Hollywood's legendary Chateau Marmont, this atmospheric dramedy centers on hard-living actor Johnny (Stephen Dorff), whose life is thrown for a loop when his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Elle Fanning), pays him a surprise visit. As the two become better acquainted, Johnny realizes he needs to make changes. Oscar winner Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) directs this character-driven film co-starring Chris Pontius

This film should have been titled Nowhere because that's exactly where it went. Strike two for Coppola in my book.

There is nothing done poorly here. Acting, camerawork, editng etc are all good. The pacing is deliberately very slow, but I enjoyed that aspect. There is just no story and the ending is nonexistent. The characters are nice enough to like, so the pain of NOTHING happening became frustrating. A guy just meanders aimlessly through life and the camera follows him. There is NO point being made, unless that IS the point, in which case I say WTF? Really! Worst ending I have seen in decades, tied with White Ribbon for the same reason, it just stops.

Film 2/5 The only reason I didnt go to 1 star, or even zero is because a lot of the individual scenes are fairly pleasant on their own.
PQ 4/5
AQ 3/5 Some dialogue was a bit hard to make out. Not bad though.

I felt the same way about the final 15-20 minutes. Powerful combination of editing and shots made for an emotional PUNCH in the throat, in a good way.

I just went over to Rotten Tomatoes to read some reviews. It seems all the rotten ratings felt the same thing I did...

Somewhere begins with a fancy sports car driving in circles out in the desert. It's a great-looking machine, but it isn't taking us anywhere. It's a metaphor for the entire movie.

you're gonna be real pissed in about 20 days or so then. Criterion struck a deal with Hulu, so most (if not ALL) Criterions are being taken off netflix and moved over to Hulu's new service.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2380410,00.asp

edit: yep. eventually all Criterions are being taken off netflix and moved to Hulu Plus. sorry bud

I've seen the trailer quite a while ago so I know
[Show spoiler]it turns into some type of thriller
but not sure how that spoils anything...

I won't read anything else though.
