I have analyzed the pictures on dvdbeaver.com, and while I like the color scheme better on the Criterion release, the picture from Universal has slightly more detail.

Yeah, the image is sharper, isn't that what offers more detail? Plus the Universal one has about 5 more MBPS. Granted, it's because the Criterion has many more extras and they were out of space. It's really a tiny difference, but it is there. If Universal gave as much attention to the color scheme, it would have better picture all-round.

No, you can't magically create detail that isn't there, you're artificially sharpening the picture.

Not to mention the fact that those screen grabs of the Criterion edition at dvdbeaver are inaccurate and much softer than the real thing.
