Keeping conditions

Hey guys,

Just wondered how do you collectors ensure your editions are kept in pristine condition?

I've seen boxsets/cases on my shelves that I thought had been untouched but already have seen to amassed small creases/folds on them.

They don't. I have a tendancy to pull the movies out, re-arrange them, stare at them, and sometimes I even go crazy and watch them. So naturally, some wear and tear happens.

When I first moved in, I noticed some covers on my movies (especially those crummy cardboard DVD cases) were getting warped and rippled, so I've been keeping the heat on in that room to prevent excessive moisture or coldness from affecting them. I've been told that too much heat can also be damaging.

Otherwise, I doubt there's any true way to keep a movie in total mint condition, unless you never ever open its original packaging, never watch it, keep it in a high-tech stasis field, etc.

Keep them out of sunlight (it bleaches the colours of the spine over time).

Don't be heavy handed.

When watching the film put the box straight back on the shelf.

Leave a small amount of space inbetween each case. Just enough so that they don't rub and scratch together when removing one from the shelf.

NEVER lend anything out. They don't have the same appreciation as you.

This is good advice, especially if you're sides of your shelves are up against a wall. I've stripped a few slipcases by trying to cram to much on a shelf.

Tell me if I am being unreasonable here.

I have no problem lending out my Blu-rays, none whatsoever. However, I am only willing to lend them out by sticking the disc in a blank case. That should be fine. Its only the disc that is needed.

Wrong. My mates go nuts, badgering on as to why can't they have it in its original packaging and that I am ridiculous. Well, having lent things out in its original packaging before, I have received them back with sweat marks all over the case, artwork being ripped and (in one case) the artwork not coming back at all.

Now, I am under absolutely no obligation to lend out my Blu-rays anyway, so I honestly cannot see whats wrong.

No mate I don't think you're been unreasonable. You want to keep your Blu's in nice condition and your buddies don't get it. I'm the type of guy who if I borrow something I treat it like my own even if it's a boxset from a library. I lent a PS2 game to a neighbour and the disc was scratched to pieces and the box looked like it had been in a nuclear explosion.

Putting the case in a spare box isn't unreasonable by any means. Do they want to watch the film or want to look at the box? If they don't like it direct them to the nearest Blockbusters or give them the link to LoveFilm.com.

My brother has one of my Star Trek boxsets and I know it's not going to come back in pristine condition but I know he'll look after it the best he can.

I'm a bit OCD about my stuff anyways (we've had a thread about it before if I remember) and I dread people picking up my stuff with booklets and making fingernail marks as they turn the page (and those sweaty finger prints are a treat). They always seem to go straight for the booklets lol....

Unfairly though these are the people who never drop a boxset crunching the corner (which I do quite frequently) or get a damaged set through the post....

i agree, if i lend stuff out unless to my brother, I usually lend them out in a spare case with the disc inside. been burnt a few too many times.

Saying that, I have one colleague who I will never lend to anymore, after lending him some films he somehow managed to scratch them, which is virtually impossible for a blu-ray unless running a knife through it or something

I also had to buy a new copy of Friday,the same colleague borrowed it and after numerous attempts to ask for it back and him insisting that he already gave it back I just gave up and bought a US copy. So I have a blank Friday (uk) box and a US copy

That's basically enough not to lend anything at all.
