Have seen concept a while back in Popular Science. Air or pneumatic tires are used because they deliver a smoother ride. Really old cars had skinney solid rubber tires that never went flat, but the ride I heard was terrible, and was good only for slow speeds. Neverthless, it was a tough sell at time to get people to use air when there was such a risk of a flat, but I'm sure the desire to drive faster helped move things along. Looks like we are now going between the two extremes. I see it is being used on construction equipment.

The real problem now is the growing trend of larger rims which gives us all smaller tires with worse rides and bigger chance of damage to not just the rims, but to the tires as-well.
