Interesting report, but if you look at the 30 day graph, it's pretty close to parity up until this month, where Blu-ray Disc sales show a greater percentage of total sales.
There's no doubt in my mind that Warner's decision will hurt HD DVD and help Blu-ray Disc, at least in the USA. That being said, I think Warner's decision was premature,, particularly in the light of the fact that HD DVD's can be manufactured on existing DVD lines, while Blu-ray Disc DVD;s require new equipment.

As I've said in the past, each format has a lot to offer. The one thing I find troubling about Blu-ray Disc is that it is still a work in progress.
It won't be until BDA profile 2.0 players are available on the market that Blu-Ray Disc players exhibit the same features that were available on HD DVD from day one. Once players are generally available that will support 1080p/120 fps and suppport for 24 fps movies, the market will become more stable.
I'm looking forward to the day when profile 2.0 Blu-ray Disc players will be available in the sub-$300 price range. Until then, I'll wait.

So true. Its comical. They have their talking points and can't be turned off of them. They just go back to the same 3 points no matter the discussion. He was responding to a sales graph showing DUDs tanking big time. Only one of those guys could spin that and of course go back immediately to their talking points, and then pretend to be "neutral" or in the middle or something.

Yeah exactly. I told him, try a PS3 its future proof. And since when are "improvements" and "upgrades" evidence of an unfinished or unfinalized spec. Its called upgradeability. The beauty of the Blu-ray and the PS3.

The problem with his stupid rant is that all of those criticisms of blu have been true from day 1 and have not deterred sales. If anything, all of those things are now on the verge of becoming eliminated and can only drive sales upward rapidly.

If the graph they're looking at is the Amazon sales rank chart it's very deceptive. As you move from the lowest sales ranks towards the top you're moving exponentially more product rather than the linear multiple those charts imply.

Ah... Who gives a d*mn. Let them whine. If it happens to HD DUD it always get exaggerated (in positive and negative). Paramount was given 150 (but it isn't true). WB would be given $ 500 (not to forget Fox/MGM too... it's seen as a fact, but doesn't have a reliable source). Blu Ray have been winning all years sales. HD DUD have improved their sales marginally (not mentioning they lost all year). They can count the X Box 360 junk. Blu Ray can't count the PS3, because people aren't using it as a Blu Ray player... 2008 is the year that blu-ray takes a quantum leap forward. 2009 is the year that PS3 games start going beyond what the 360 is capable of and the hardcore gamers can no longer ignore the shortcomings of the 360.

Of COURSE it will hurt HD DVD and help Blu-ray. But it was no premature at all! In fact it should have been sooner so help end the war earlier. But it is still good timing, going into a new year with a new outlook on the war.
If they are so concerned with profile 2.0, maybe they should wait until they are out... say... this month (ever heard of the PS3?) or the others coming out before summer. We all know that we are early adopters and that choosing a side so early can mean better upgraded drives later. All the average people who will buy them this year for christmas will likely get 2.0 compliant drives. I think by the time they get off their high horse and realize that they were wrong, and HD DVD has failed, and that Blu-ray is the way to go... profile 2.0 players will be the norm.

this is like in the movie "school ties"... where Joe Pesci plays a homeless guy... and for some reason he was in the ivy league classroom and the professor was asking what's so good about the US constitution... and Pesci basically drills the professor a new one... he said that the best thing about the constitution was that it's upgradable, that the founding fathers can never predict what the future holds, so they made a document that is flexible and adjustable while still remaining "iron" (as in iron pen in National Treasure). the PS3 is basically the same... it's future proof.

what im sick and tired of is how they don't get the only reason they were able to get into hd dvd so cheap is because of how desperate hd dvd was to sell players.

they think that blu-ray can't be mainstream because of its price. DVD was more expensive when it came out and it is mainstream now. PRICES FALL PEOPLE! Early DVD players could not do all the things later ones did too. Its part of the growing pains with new technology. The fact that HD DVD was able to have its entire profile complete at launch just goes to show you that it was under engineered.

the dvd market took about 3 years to really take off, blu-ray hasn't even been out for 2 and dare i say the only reason dvd took off big time 3 years after it was introduced was because of Sony's Playstation 2.
