Correct, the link is to the GWP item (The One Ring), and item only.

Nowhere in the link are any of the BB sets:
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Editions) or Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Editions) (Best Buy Exclusive) or LotR: FotR (Theatrical Release) or LotR: TT (Theatrical Release) or LotR: RotK (Theatrical Release) or The Lord of the Rings (Bakshi Version) or Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Theatrical Edition GWP Item - Steelbook)

So no clue what they were talking about.

Edit: Oh and I got that link location directly from bestbuy.com's weekly ad.

I found this comparison online:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/58213
They're jpegs, and it seems to be from a rip rather than the Bluray, but it does demonstrate the difference.

That.... doesn't look right. The "extended" Blu-ray screen grab has a negative defect on the left hand side of the frame that doesn't exist in the "theatrical" screen grab. Or atleast, it looks like a negative error, but could very well be from overprocessing the screen grab to look less processed.

PJ did a ton of manipulation (color timing, DNR, and the like) to the original master of the film, which caused a lot of people to complain about the original Blu-ray release - even though that was the only way the film had ever been presented. If you pull back on the color and saturation, and then add some artificial noise, you can make it look as if there was less manipution, even though you are just adding more on top of what was already done.

Im not sure how much I like the "corrections"... tbh i wasnt that upset by the theatrical transfer but based on the screen shots above it seems its hit or miss on which one looks better

Remember that these are reduced-bitrate rips so they'll have compression artifacts etc. Also the Extended version seems to be reframed to one side in some shots so they probably arent exact-frame matches.

No, that is a free gift with purchase of the one ring with preorder of the Extended's. I paid 10 bucks towards the Extendeds, and went and picked up this little gem for free. Same as the stickerbook preorder from the Theatrical versions.

I like the wide crowd shot. However, the close up on the ring is blown out and everything is WAAAAY too green. I'll have to see it in motion.

Agreed. Why is everything so green?

Yeah, I'm not too keen on the color palatte, but maybe it will be different when I'm not looking at HUGE screenshots and actually watching the BD's. The DNR on the TE release looked pretty aweful when looking at certain screenshots but then on the BD in motion it didn't seem so bad. Maybe this will be the same.

They didn't do anything... they went back to the original master before PJ tweaked it with color timing and made adjustments.

I'm currently reading the books for the first time ever, as well. Loving every minute of it. Painstaking well-written. He created a culture, rich with history. Though I LOVE the films, but these books are just incredible.
Good for you! The films are really well done but the books are genius! Personally, it grates me a bit to talk the LOTR with folk only to find their estimation of the work is based solely on the films..You hit the nail on the head with the language, culture and high fantasy Tolkein created. Now wait until you read the Silmarillion...talk about deep

I'd find that surprising. The Color grading wasn't just about shading a shot a certain color. There were certain parts of shots that we lit up, given a "glow" effect (Lothlorien), etc. In the case of Boromir's last scene, they used it to slowly (and subtly) drain the color from his face.
