The only game for the GC that I can I actually remember being online back then was Phantasy Star. With their last few consoles what Nintendo had in innovation, they lacked in standard features. It plagued them when they stuck with cartridges for the N64, little to no online support for GC, and no HD or DVD playback for the Wii. It's like having a car that can run on water but lacking air conditioning and power windows. It's the only analogy I can think of.
What I took from the press conference is they are moving back towards the core gamer market with the big HD graphics and online play but @ the same time trying to keep a foot in the door with the casual Wii market. The new controller seems to be even more polarizing than the Wii-mote was.
